Are there reasons I'd want to play on a high or low population realm? Auction House? Guilds? I've been on Dalaran since I started, and it's kinda crowded.
Low pop non-PvE can have a lot of rares up.
Auction house. I have characters on a low pop realm and it’s frustrating to never find what I’m looking for on that AH.
Auction house and guilds are the only real reasons.
Unless you like RP'ing and hate CRZ. Then you can hope on ED or another RP server. These don't phase with other realms like normal.

I play on Silverhand / Thorium Brotherhood / Farstriders . All RP
We're listed as "High Pop" which is odd, because before B4A, Silver Hand was low. Really low.
I love it. Perhaps not as many people around in the lowbie zones, but by and large, we're a friendly bunch.
Not enough Dwarves of course, but, no server is perfect.

Sharding and realm-hopping addons have made this mostly irrelevant.10/29/2018 11:17 AMPosted by KeelhaulLow pop non-PvE can have a lot of rares up.
Low pop realms make basically everything harder and more expensive. Grouping for content is harder, progression is harder, the Auction House is mostly empty and what is for sale is very expensive...unless you just like being by yourself I wouldn’t recommend it.
Blizzard needs to rescue those poor people on dead servers and give them all free transfers.
Edit: lol, I’m on Dal too
I'm on a low pop server.
Don't do it. The ah is the biggest problem. Need raid pots? Sucks to be you there are none up!
Need extra feast mats? Too bad! None up.
Unless you're the kind of person who likes gathering almost literally every mat.... Low pop stinks.
PS. Blizz merge cenarius

Unless you want to RP / Raid mythic or care about lowest prices on AH, it doesn't matter what realm you pick whatsoever. Everything is sharded, non-rp realm communities has long since died out as a result.
My server has been for "New Players" for years. We have basically no progression in our battle group.
Most items on the AH are rare and expensive.
You will meet few to none in the outside world depending on the time. I guess that's good I was able to level in Warmode without much fuss.
You will feel like you are playing Skyrim or Witcher 3 rather than an MMO most of the time.
Don't do it. If I could afford it, I'd transfer all my characters off my current server/battlegroup.

The only toon I have left on a low pop RP realm went to Goldshire to put out the fires from the Headless Horseman. Several times I checked and nobody was around to help. Nobody was around last year either.
High PoP: has more options for Mythic Raiding and Various in-realm groups of various purposes. More likely to run into people interested in doing the same thing at the same time. Economy is better. But crowded.
Low PoP: less crowded. Better for rares and selling rare items, and collecting rare items. More tight knit community. But less options.

I’m on your server, so I get why you’d be tired of the crowds. Full servers do have their downsides. Trying to do quests and collect your bear arses can be a pain when there is the equivalent of a raid group running around doing the same quests.
But it seems to me that the downsides outweigh the benefits, especially since I’ve seen people who did it thinking they would be able to quietly hunt rares and found out that the competition was just as bad on dead servers, with none of the benefits of high-pop.
Roll a level 1 on one and try it out. Best way to make up your mind.

i chose this realm because i wanted this name. it was the only reason. every other server before this had twitchy taken. this is no lie.
it is a low pop server and i couldnt be happier. there are enough people on it to get into groups without things being overly crowded.
by the way many of the other characters names i tried were also available

This, right here. Thanks for the CRZ blizzard, higher populated servers come in, and eat up all of the rares and resources. SO my AH is dead 90% of the time. Really awesome. NOT. Stop with your bandaid fixes, and merg lower servers or stop forcing them into frigging CRZ that just makes things worse.
or hell, here is a crazy idea, servers that are in CRZ with each other, also CRZ their auction houses, but that would be a smart idea, therefor never happen....

Pretty much, I play on Gilneas/Elune and its not dead as some wish it was but its not what it once was.

Several times they changed the population description on the "choose a realm" screen overnight in Legion. I don't think we can draw any conclusion at all from those terms.
Low pop realms can have some really good names open. I picked up Nyx and Gaia on one in Legion.
I still prefer high pop realms, though.

My medium pop realm has a lightning fast Auction House even if it is a little sparse, you learn to know the economy there. My other full server's Auction House is SLOW as molasses to the point of almost being unusable.
OP, the only real perk I can think of, other than easier rares, is that servers with shared realms effectively increases the amount characters you can make on a server. So if you want 20-30 alts who can benefit from the fortune of your main character, a low pop realm that has 1-2 shared realms with it is for you. But I haven't hit the limit on my server so it's not really a huge perk for me.
It's not really worth the trade off of a lack of guilds/progression imo. Most people I do stuff with and see out in the world are people I can't trade with or join guilds with. It's kind of lame. Most end up being 5 minute friends. The whole "join a guild if you don't like to pug" is just not that big of an option on low pop realms.
