HIGH Memory Usage ONLY when Prospecting

I have 32GB of RAM, and when idle in a major city like Orgrimmar or just casually running around, I’m only sitting at around 6-7GB of RAM usage with add-ons.

When I stand Idle in the same city (Orgrimmar), and prospect Ore, my memory usage gradually increases, literally every single time I prospect. I was under the impression that since the action is server-side, it would rely more on the server than my computer at home.

If I prospect for 2 hours, my RAM usage from “Wow.exe” goes from the idle 7GB up to 95% memory usage (over 30GB) while literally just sitting idle prospecting, not moving, etc.

Why is this?

You guys make prospecting a chore, introducing multiple techniques to do it when mass-prospecting was fine and did not need any altering. Essentially, you’re fixing something that wasn’t broken, and now it’s broken.

There is no reason I should be FORCED to log out after prospecting for a few hours sitting idle in a main city due to low memory when I have an OVERKILL PC setup. Should not need more than 32GB to play an almost 19-year-old game.

I hope some optimizations will be made regarding this issue in the future, as it is completely ridiculous to have a $2,200 PC setup and still have an issue with an almost 19-year-old game.

I won’t bother getting into the massive delays that have been plaguing moving into and out of guild bank tabs, essentially taking as much as 15 seconds to withdraw or deposit a single item at times.

try /reloading tbh

might be some weird memory leaks with prospecting

Has to be an addon, have you tried disabling ALL of them? Only one way to find out…

Also, could be an add modifying it’s data base on your computer…

Im thinking its either a weakaura or a different addon thats constantly reading your character (i.e. altoholic). I think there is either an information overload from all the data, or a potential memory leak. Try doing a /reload to see if that fixes the problem. Otherwise check to see which addon is using the most RAM in-game and consider disabling that while prospecting.

Sounds more like a isolated issue on your end, if it was a memory leak or something is unnecessarily hogging up memory, it be talked about sooner. Check your addons, rename your WTF files before assuming its that, or worse case but unlikely, your hardware can be the culprit.

Craftsim is also a huge memory hog, if you’re running it.

I turn off all useless addons, dbm etc.that I don’t use at the time and only have them on when using. Check your drivers too,if they are not up to date they can add problems.

With me it everything I have to build a new computer soon as everything is demanding more memory every up date .This rig is about 12yrs old and I got my money wealth out of it.

Yea, these days with how much total memory a board can hold, overkill is worth it in the long run. I put 64GB in this i7 9700K build and it has not disappointed.

I only use Postal & Altoholic for Add-ons. My Wife has just Postal & Leatrix and we both suffer from the same memory leak, maxing out our 32GB RAM in about 2 hours but ONLY when prospecting. I can play for 8 hrs no problem but if we prospect, then the memory usage goes up.

If you google the issue of memory leak or high usage when prospecting, there are a dozen threads online.

The only add-ons I have are Postal which is a mail add-on and Altoholic which tracks my items. That may be the issue but doesn’t explain why my wife has the same memory leak issue, 2 completely different PC builds, 2 completely different operating systems, and different add-ons. Doesn’t seem like It’s an isolated issue on my end if it’s happening to multiple people specifically when doing a defined in-game action overtime.
