Latency has been terrible the past couple of days. Usually things are fine until around 7 or 8 PM EST then the game becomes pretty much unplayable with the delay between hitting a button and the spell actually being cast. 99.99% certain it’s nothing on my end as I have 700ish Mbps download speed and 900ish Mbps upload speed with latency between my home and the speed test server around 25 ms ping. Any idea what’s going on? I know about the DDOS the other day. Is that still ongoing?
Speed actually has nothing to do with anything almost everything you do on the internet you would never notice massive packet loss. Generally speaking if you are using the test server for your ISP you are only pinging the first node inside their Network it is most likely a routing issue. An ISP to stay within their Network will add thousands of miles to your trip I have seen them route from Montana to Chicago or Houston and then back to the West Coast servers. Have you tested with a VPN to see if your issue goes away
I do not have access to a VPN at the moment so I won’t be able to test that theory. I’ve tried testing servers in both LA and Chicago and both seem normal. I play on Thrall and from what I understand that realm is normally managed by the Chicago datacenter. Not sure what else I can do at this point.
There are lots of free VPNs out there.
Its not just you OP, this has been a situation for well over a month now, i.e have encountered stuttering/random disconnection issues, distorted coloring and memory leaks.. Take for instance RBGS knockbacks can throw you out of the map and into an endless free fall. The only way to respawn is to wait for match to end, you log in a immediately d.cd, never to get “lucky.” A vicious cycle of d/cs and intermittent lag spikes, This is the real Hardcore WoW, its like being able to see in darkness.
As stated by many in forums this has been ongoing for over a month, Imagine all the folks who wanted to play WOW again!! for first time in months if not years during their holiday breaks, just to log in and be greeted with the WORST lag spikes they’ve ever experienced, thus slowing gameplay down to a slight stutter every 6 secs. Whether you PvP or PvE, play classic or retail or Remix the lag remains the constant. Yea I’d say you are most definitely NOT alone OP, just know its not your fault and its been taken out of your hands.. You could try praying, I did. “Lord, we humbly ask that you smite the wreatched lag out of existence.. Amen.”
Yes, I too am experiencing high latency. I am currently fishing for rep with Conjurer Margoss and the lag is rediculous. Can’t fish, fly away, talk to anyone. Then a few minutes goes by and I am back in business. So, come on WOW, figure it out!!!
High Latency while fishing is hard to achieve.. congrats! How many fish got away during those few minutes?
I would try a VPN there are lots of routing issues and your ISP. Is more interested in staying in their Network to get you to the end then the effects on gaming. Most of what I have seen so far has been fixed with a VPN
Not familiar with any free ones. Any trustworthy ones you recommend?
I don’t love recommending stuff as an MVP, especially security-related software. I recommend just picking one from Reddit.
i dc’d 10 times today in rated pvp chicago servers are cooked.
i never lag.
Disagree, Illidan has been fine all day.
other servers that are fried.
Ah I see. So maybe don’t bring it up next time as you can’t speak to the trustworthiness or efficacy of said solution.
If a vpn isn’t an option, contacting your isp to see if they’re aware of any routing issues. Even if your internet is ok.
Tom’s guide is a good place to look almost all of them have a very small data cap they should be enough to test

Lol, vpn isnt going to fix anything.. its clearly a GPU driver issue, i wonder where the future of online gaming is heading if the most powerful cards on market aren’t running on stable drivers.. This seems happening right as Nvidia drops support for 9/10 series.. You can have the most expensive, highest spec GPU known to man if the drivers arent stable the card itself will be useless. Why dont you just tell them this instead of having them go down a rabbit hole?
Are you saying that because you couldn’t be bothered to make any effort at all to follow through on a very good suggestion? That’s on you, bud. Sometimes to get help, you also have to help yourself.
Edit:
What does latency have to do with a driver issue? Are you posting in the wrong thread?
You chimed in on a thread that in no way needed your input. You literally said “There are lots of free VPNs out there” as your first reply to anything. Yeah I’m sure there are, just like there’s tons of free other programs and utilities and games for PC. Doesn’t mean they are safe or trustworthy. So you being labeled as a “Tech MVP” I simply asked what free VPN you would recommend. And you gave an asinine answer that you don’t like recommending things as a MVP and that I should just pick one from Reddit. All I’m saying is that if you’re a Tech MVP and you can’t recommend anything because of your forum label then don’t bring it up as it isn’t at all helpful.
The MVP recommended a VPN, much like they might recommend more RAM, or other changes.
Then it is your job to find the VPN, the compatible RAM, etc.
The MVP doesn’t know your budget, your security preferences or anything else. Instead of whining and complaining use Google and do your own homework. If you aren’t going to take the recommendations from the forum, there is no need for you to post.
