High Latency in-game but Speed test OK?

Hello I have run multiple speed tests to dallas, chicago, etc. My ping and jitter is SUB 30 MS. I am “hard-wired” through ethernet into my cable connection.

The problem is when I am in World of Warcraft. For the past month I have been experiencing higher than normal latency during the day (60-100) and absolutely unplayable latency during the evening (200-4000).

The most frustrating thing is my ISP has me run “speed tests” which show everything to be perfectly fine. I am trying to understand how I can explain the problem to them so that something can be done to fix it.

Ok, look at those three lines.

You have 6% packet loss at your router that persists through the test.

You have 300+MS latency spikes starting from your router that persist.

Your connection to your router is bad.

You may need to update network card drivers.
You may need to reboot the router.
You may need to update the router’s firmware.
You may need to replace the ethernet cable.

The issue starts at your router.
If it is rented from your isp, they may replace it. Otherwise, you’ll need to troubleshoot it or replace it.

Help me understand why this only shows on the WinMTR program when connecting to the wow server ?

The reason I’m asking is this:

When I speak with my ISP rep they have me run speed tests & they run speed tests on their side & say “Everything looks good.”

I’m unable to show them the WinMTR data over the phone… what can I do when my speed test to Dallas shows 6 MS but the WinMTR data is showing something completely different ? Why is there a variance ???

Speed tests don’t look for packet loss or latency. They just care how fast it moves a file from point a to point b.

You run a winmtr to the wow server so that we can see if there’s an issue between you and the wow server. Speedtests don’t run to the wow servers.

Ask for a level 2 tech, politely, and use your words to tell them the results of the winmtr.
Specifically, packet loss on the router onwards.

Wow doesn’t need 200mb download speeds. It needs a stable connection. You don’t have a stable connection, and the winmtr proves it.

Thanks for your reply but the speedtest i run actually does have ping as a category and it’s always very low. I’m trying to understand how that’s possible but the Winmtr is showing high latency at the same time.

Ping is not latency for a run.
Ping is latency to a point.

Pathping is closer to winmtr.

Also, I’ll say it again, the speedtest runs to different servers, not blizzards. Running a speedtest and assuming it can tell you anything about getting to blizzards servers is like asking for directions to Boston and driving to San Francisco and wondering why the results aren’t the same.

I understand your point, but if the problem is from the starting point (my router) shouldnt the speed test at least show some issues?

What is pathping? Would that be worthwhile to run?

My ISP is sending out a Technician tomorrow at 3 PM. What should I Tell him?

Blizzards servers are trash, its not just you.

Speedtest doesn’t check for these issues. Speedtest checks for speed. That’s all it checks for. It is a bandwidth test, not a stability test.

PACKET LOSS.

Run the winmtr in front of the tech.
