Finally, someone understands what I wanted blood elves to be!
Certain Tolkien fans are exceptionally elitist and arrogant about it. Certain GRRM fans just donât like how rainbow-and-sunshine Tolkienâs work looks on the surface level and think the gritty realism of ASOIAF makes it superior. Both these certain groups are idiots.
Anyone who can separate their own identity from the fictional universes they love can see they both shine in their own complementary ways. GRRM understands the value of brevity and realism; Tolkien wanted to create a vividly detailed and elaborate legendarium for his true passion - language - to have meaning and value.
To be clear, GRRM is a lot easier to read. Tolkien goes into exacting detail about genealogies, history, language, culture, whereas GRRM is more writing a character story than a world.
Iâve always wanted to read up on the English histories that inspired ASOIAFâs world but frankly Iâve just had so very much to study about American history. I could talk for hours about Theodore Roosevelt⊠an inspiration and role model if ever there was one.
If nothing else⊠read Beren and LĂșthien. Itâs a chapter within The Silmarillion and itâs also a compilation book put together by his son which goes through all the different drafts and versions and ideas of his father in writing the story.
This isnât the most pleasant webpage to look at, but it does seem to have the text of the story.
I doubt they were going to go all road warrior. The idea of âI am pretty, elegant, noble, and absolutely willing to suck the life out of you like the perfect predatorâ is much more interesting.
If they went the road warrior route, itwould just play into the notion of the Horde being the âmonsterâ faction.
It is also harder to wrap your mind around conceptually.
Eh. I still would prefer the half-degenerate âsavageâ elves over the pretty boys and valley girls. Itâs the same thing that makes me so dissatisfied with WoWâs night elves. WC3 nelves were amazons. Look at the flowers, right, writers?
To me the context of who heâs pulling on from historical parallels is what makes me such a fan too!
DIVIDED AGAIN! Iâm not a fan of American history as far as a point of study the way I am a fan on European history, but I am obsessed with royal families the Habsburgs, Valois, Bourbons, the Boleynâs mixed with the Nevilles remind me of House Tyrell, marriages, courts and the lives of the nobility. I like to sit here and think âWho was Marie Antoinetteâs best friendâ and go to myself OH the Duchess of Polignac of course love that for her.
I have it open on a tab on my iPad I shall read some before bed!
As to this and respectfully of course. I have to disagree I love pomp and circumstance and the Blood Elves provide me with the personality types of people I enjoy most.
Iâll admit, I do like the occasional indulgence in it. Hell, Iâve rewatched AHS: Coven like six times since it came out. Donât judge; Asylum is still the best season, of course.
The greatest thing, I think, about history is that it is so incredibly intricate and detailed and nobody could ever hope to master even a fraction of it. You could study the details of the Battle of Gettysburg for your entire life and still not know the full story.
Thatâs why itâs so important that people have varied historical interests! Weâll have to teach each other history sometime.
My personality gravitates to, Coven, Hotel and Apocalypse as my favorite seasons of AHS they all have a level of relatability to me in the characters.
I think Iâve loved history since I was like 5, I remember being young and my grandma was watching 1963 Elizabeth Taylors Cleopatra, I had no concept it was like a classic basically already at that point by a good 50 years lol. I was obsessed with pomp and circumstance and any narrative / personality that captures that ever since!
Its why I like the Blood Elves the way they are too! And root for what I root for in story narratives!
I think Iâve seen Hotel three times in total? I just started watching AHS again after a few years, so Iâve only just made it to Apocalypse. Iâm gonna watch episode 4 before bed tonight.
When I was watching Hotel as it aired I was pleasantly surprised at how well Gaga performed. I know she can sing and dance of course, but sheâs also a fine actress. Doesnât have Langeâs gravitas, but who would have really? Itâs hard to fill in that kind of dramatic weight with an already established series.
Funny enough, Iâm the only person in my family who cares about history at all. My grandmother actively avoids the subject, my mother is indifferent, and my siblings are too young to care.
I certainly understand the appeal of the pomp though. It has a weight to it in certain stories that make the entire thing much more worthwhile. See Coven, if near everyone in that season hadnât been pompous it wouldnât have been entertaining.
But we see them sabotage Blood Elf efforts to rebuild Quelâthalas instead of helping, like their own fallen war hero came in to do instead.
I think if Blood Elves went Alliance, they would basically be High Elves in the Alliance High Elf sense of stoicism, reserved, all the qualities that people may like Alliance High Elves for but not why I like Blood Elves.
History plays a part why I arguably like Blood Elves over Night Elves too (they play to a more aristocratic narrative / have a level of vanity I respect and relate to). But I respect those who prefer Night Elves. In fact itâs why Iâm so passionate about Alliance High Elves, because I know how much I adore identifying with a narrative I love in a race I play.
Thats a shame too bad they do not enjoy it as much as you!
Just like how the nightborne decided to join the Horde, all because Tyrande and literally nobody else at all said a few things that hurt poor Thalyssraâs feelings. Actually, come to think of it, that oneâs even worse. But still not as bad asâŠ
I mean, who was it who invaded your villages during the second war? Thatâs right, the Horde. And who was it who came along and stopped them from advancing any further and killing any more of your people? Thatâs right, the Alliance. Youâre welcome, Anasterian! Maybe if you hadnât been so quick to leave our side, we couldâve worked together to prevent some of the destruction brought about by the scourge. But noooooâŠ
Heh, yeah I donât get many chances to discuss history or political science with people. Only one of my friends is really into the subjects but at least I do get to have a lot of long discussions with her about it
