High CPU Usage on 8.2.5

Is this why I keep getting random game freezes and lockup’s since the latest patch the other day? Doing one of the cinematic scenes for the war campaign screens went black and started flashing black and green. Had to hard shutdown my 2014 iMac.

Thank you, Omegall! I’m really looking forward to playing this patch, but have held off because the temperature spikes spooked me.

I opened a ticket. Here’s the response. Not much help at all.

One thing you can be sure, running a GPU at 100% even for an extended amount of time does not cause overheating if the GPU itself has proper cooling. So you don’t need to worry about it, WoW even before patch 8.2.5 is known to use more one CPU rather than all, maybe you have only noticed during this patch.

To reduce the CPU usage, you can simply limit the FPS cap, which can be one of the causes, in order to do it, please follow these steps:
Go to Game Menu System Advanced Under Max Foreground/Background FPS reduce both max values. If the game is running at 4k, this should not be higher than 30 FPS, as it requires a lot of the CPU especially in busy places like raids. Other resolutions like UHD or just FullHD you can use 60 FPS, important to remember that this will not affect the game performance, you would only notice any different if your screen have more than 60hz

CS staff/in game GMs aren’t always fully informed on game bugs and don’t always have best answers. Limitting things helps lower the normal cpu usage, but it wouldn’t lower cpu usage of the bug in this case, so it’d be of little help. Just waiting for the patch that fixes it is all that you can do.

Also seeing a huge CPU spike causing temps to raise almost 10˚F and fans going crazy. Appears to be a single core going wild at 100% usage.

2017 5k Retina 27-inch iMac
Mojave 10.14.6
4.2ghz i7
32gb RAM
8gb Radeon Pro 580

I’m really worried about the effect this is having on my machine. Temps are 15 or so degrees higher than usual, and I don’t want to run my machine like this if there’s a solution Bliz can do.

I don’t mean to be a squeaky wheel, but your software might be damaging to people’s machines. That’s bad. Fix it.

Got a Ticket update if this helps clarify the issue more.

Thank you for your patience while we looked into your issue for you. Tech Specialist Logan, here. That issue you’re talking about is actually a bug as you mentioned. That said, your system is designed to handle high utilization, even for extended periods of time. Even if your fans are running hard, you should be able to keep your CPU temperatures low enough that you can maintain playing. If your PC is overheating, it usually means that the cooling is insufficient.

You have an imac so typically you’ll have better luck with heat than a macbook - if you are overheating it probably means that your thermal paste on your CPU has dried out/failed, or the imac is clogged. I’d recommend periodically cleaning the vents on an imac with a gentle vacuum, like a dust buster. This should prevent most overheating issues.

In the meantime, we can’t do much else but wait for the patch. I can’t guarantee we’ll be able to provide any kind of compensation for this, but it never hurts to check. If it takes a while to fix and you decide not to play for the duration, you can contact us when the bug is resolved to see if we can return any lost game time. Again, we can’t say for sure if we can do this, but it never hurts to check.

Either way, we appreciate you reaching out about this. If it wasn’t already on the dev’s radar, we’d definitely want to know.

I’m having an seemingly identical issue on my system:

New Macbook Pro 2019, i9
eGPU

Macbook CPU is pegged and fans going haywire.

CHANGING GRAPHICS SETTINGS TO 1 has no impact on the overheating and pegging of the CPU.

Same here.
iMac retina 5k
4ghz i7
Fix this, it’s ridiculous that a bug this serious isn’t fixed immediately

2018 iMac Pro, Vega 56, 8 GB HBM2.

WoW constantly above 150%, so one core is totally pegged.

This bug is now fixed in build 8.2.5.31984 (and later)

if any of you that might have turned multi threading off with the console command I posted earlier, should also revert that setting to get most performance out of patch now that bug is fixed.

Thanks for your efforts Omegall. Game seems back to normal

Looking good. Bugs have been fixed for me.

Thanks go out to Blizzard for responding and getting this fixed so quickly! I checked it today as well and no CPU spikes.
