Hiding giant yellow arrow and blue circles on map

Hey guys ,

I’m sure I’m not the only one who sometimes wants to be more immersed in the world and get that old school vanilla feel where you actually have to read the quest to find out where to go and what to do, but the giant yellow “?” and arrow on the minimap completely ruins that sense of discovery. Why is there not an option to hide these quest helpers? It’s actually frustrating. If anyone knows of any addons that will do this please share! And I hope Blizzard considers adding an option to hide this quest helper in the future.

Edit: Also, the giant sparklies that accompany any quest objective. Really? It’s like I’m playing Dora the Explorer

Thank you! I didn’t know about the main map that’s great!

I can’t seem to figure out how to get rid of the yellow arrow pointing to quests though.

And afraid there is no such advanced spell effects type setting that I can find to hide that. Thanks for the reply tho.

Queequag’s probably using an add-on that does that, either directly or through TomTom.

Queequag, turn off that add-on or figure out how to configure it to stop giving you quest objective pointers

It’s not an addon. It’s a part of the default UI, and there’s not any way I know of to turn it off.

I have a macro to toggle the whole minimap off and on which I use when I want a more immersive feel. (I also swap the world map to full size so I’m not running around with it open.)

Here’s the macro I use:
/run local m=Minimap if m:IsShown()then m:Hide()else m:Show()end

Thanks for the reply! I’ll give this a try

I agree. However, having quests pre-clustered, having mobs pre-grouped into packs whcih are either meant to be soloed or done in groups of 4 maximum, and having questing be so linear, are three things which make it take an absolute minimum of brain power. The increase in pace with which they are meant to be completed means a decrease in experience and mob experience. Couple a minimum of challenge with a minimum of reward and you get a grindy experience which lacks stimulation. It’s a race to get to the next hub.

Back in Classic, Hubs were not clearly delineated. NPCs in one town would send you all over the map, instead of to one locale after another in sequence. We no longer have to plan out your own course or decide whose quests to do first in order to sync with later quests. Additionally, some NPCs would send you to another zone entirely. (Remember the Linken chain in Un’Goro Crater? Remember seeing that big stone room in Feralas and wondering how to get in, and wondering what the heck that herb was for? Ten levels later, it’s useful!) (Was it called Evoroot? Everoot?)

That was exciting. Thank goodness for built-in quest helper helping me burn through these brain-dead quests, and now the quest “outlines” identifying quest objects and people from a distance.

Sadly, this is all miles more efficient than spamming dungeons, actually playing my character and killing stuff, for ten levels. I miss immersion. I really only get it in raids anymore.
