Hey guys. Thinking about leveling a mage. Are they fun solo and how hard is it to find groups for pve? Pvp?

I’m wondering if mage would be a good choice for a main for solo content mythic keys pvp?

Mage isn’t a great solo class. Your defence basically boils down to kiting and anything threatening enough to warrant kiting is generally immune to it.

For groups, mage does quite well. Mage generally has at least one meta dps spec at all times and you bring Time Warp. As far as dps queues go, mage probably has it the best.

Haven’t done much PvP lately but mage usually does pretty well there.

Quite weak overall, though Arcane on WM on can be incredibly good if you don’t care to fight much and just want to run around and collect stuff (think Korthia)

All 3 specs are very good

I don’t PvP at all but based on AWC I’d say Fire is the strongest.

I tend to disagree with all posters here. I main a mage and, my ilvl is very low for current standards but…i find it very easy to do all content. I main as fire, I PvP, I run keys all day. Work keeps me busy quit a bit so i dont play much anymore but 1v1 i can kill most any class unless they are very skilled/geared. We are highly sought after as dps in raids/instances and as far as soloing goes you will learn to kite very well by the time you hit lvl 20. Once you learn you rotation you can solo stuff other toon REQUIRE a group to complete as well so if you want to be extremely OP and have a great transportation system built in choose a mage. None can beat us But all want to be us. Have fun with whatever you choose as in the end its all about what you enjoy.

Don’t. Blizzard doesn’t know how to handle mages. Everything is old and clunky.
Covenants change every .5 patch.
You have zero survivability or self healing.
Glass cannon without the canon.

Be a hybrid class… the new dps classes

Totally 100% wrong here. Mage is one of the most durable dps right now. Just because you don’t know how to play the class doesn’t make them squishy. Not even factoring in the the multiple defensive conduits, you have Alter time, mirror images, your specs shield spell and ice block (x2 as frost mage). Fire also gets a cheat death with cauterize. If you have trouble staying alive as a mage that’s your problem, you should try getting your ilvl higher than 219 before judging the classes defensives too.

As for your other points, Arcane and frost definitely could use some updating mechanically, but literally all 3 mage specs are meta and performing well right now, it’s a very good time to be a mage.

Speaking as a lowly ilvl220, I would say that Mages are totally viable for soloing content. Mages certainly aren’t “tanky” but they are a lot less squishy than they used to be.

Depends on the content.

Frost is pretty bad in Mythic SoD on fights that are tier defining/walls/difficult. Frost isn’t meta in SoD by any measure.

Arcane is actually incredible if a fight is on farm or if all the DPS checks/timings are extremely telegraphed. But it’s a tad wobbly in getting its numbers up there on prog or reacting to sudden changes that happen during its burst.

Fire is probably the best/meta mage spec for raiding right now, and it tends to eclipse the other 2 on most of the fights easily. It’ll always be the go-to for raids as long as it holds its advantage of a guaranteed burst with Combustion.

You have no basis to judge what I know or don’t know about the class.

Having started then stopped playing my mage for 3 expansions in a row to switch to other classes, I’m providing my opinion that the OP should look elsewhere. Until Blizz wants to address the serious design flaws of all 3 specs, I recommend people steer clear.
The over-tune then nerf cycle is getting stale.
Having obviously played the first tier. Switching covenants and specs mid-9.0 because they can’t decide in Beta how they want the class to play. And then nerfing the crap out of the burst cycle and optimal legendary. Am done with the games.
The class is too unstable. Play a hybrid.

This is one of the more enjoyable classes for what you’ ve described… I wouldn’t pay too much heed to any mention that this class is squishy or lacks damage. It is a high skill cap class from my experiences, playing well and efficiently (lining timings up properly, reacting to procs etc) will reward you with competitive dps to any class out there in almost any circumstance. You have multiple defensives which make you extremely survivable especially when used properly. I have no experience with arcane mage so I’ve always benefited from either cheat death or two ice blocks but even without that additional tool, you have a reduced alter time cooldown which is an incredibly powerful defensive on 1 minute so at 30 seconds when used properly on top of everything else should prove to make them super survivable too. I find I can be effective in all content formats, I do a lot of solo bugging for all forms of content and yeah I get declined to a lot of groups… but I get into a lot of groups.
