It laid the groundwork for a lot of the bad things that came later, but it’s hardly comparable to the disaster that Retail has become.

I liked goblin and worgen starting adventure in cata. That was the fun part.
TBC and wolk has good parts too, but many bad as well… flying, dungeon finder, etc…

Cata is when the devs tried to recreated TBC briefy. Wrath babies revolted. Dungeons requiring CC and self awareness again was beyond their understanding.
Wrath is the true birthplace of “welfare” epics, and brain dead heroic dungeons. The badge system handing out free gear.

wotlk was only the most successful one because vanilla and tbc word of mouth spread so much how good it was, everyone who has not tried it jumped in.
Wotlk got A LOT of things wrong and was an inferior expansion to TBC and vanilla. By a lot. Cata was just so much worse that people look fondly back on Wotlk

By what metric is it the most popular? The absolute sub peak was cata, not WotLK, vanilla had the most growth by a long shot followed by BC, and shadowlands is the fastest selling.
The only good things about WotLK are the story and ulduar, everything else was pretty mediocre or bad.
