Herod pop problem solved

Live broadcast of launch day on Herod.

Can’t they?

I was under the impression the cap was artificial in order to encourage a spread of the population in order to not disrupt phase 2 no layering.

10 IQ Post.

That’s probably one of the main reasons, also putting too many people on one server can’t be good for a launch experience no matter how many layers you try to put them in. Doing what OP suggested would probably be the dumbest thing you could do.

One of my main concerns is if I play hunter, I want on a server with as many layers as possible. I want to get Broken Tooth asap.

That’s not really how that works.

I have to say, the wide-spread 180 that posts have taken from “LAYERING IS THE WORST” in the months leading up Classic, to now screaming “ADD MORE LAYERS TO FIX HEROD” is absolutely glorious. I wish I could say I was surprised, but the exceedingly loud minority on the wow forums is always so painfully predictable.

But still, that doesn’t take away from my enjoyment of it all.

I don’t see why not.

Won’t he spawn on each layer?

Yes. Blizzard indirectly confirmed this by their reference to Rexxar’s long path that didn’t work on sharding tech (because he’d have to traverse cross-shard). This indirectly confirms that Rexxar’s path only works if isolated to a given layer, meaning one Rexxar per-layer. So, by proxy, 1 Broken Tooth per layer.

But they also stated there’s a bunch of internal hidden cooldown timers that activate as you do various things (including logout) that would prevent you from effecting layer hopping in any quick sense of the phrase. But for ultra-long timers, I imagine layer hopping will still be a thing. It just is going to take you 15+ minutes per layer hop, at which point you start to wonder if the named has popped on your original later. TLDR: Not really effective to layer hop in most cases.

Yes but you can’t just jump layers Willy nilly. And even still you have just as much of a chance to get him on one layer than you would any other. There is just as much of a chance you’ll have as many hunters on one layer than the other attempting to grab him. And even if it was glitched to where you could manually hop layers, that means you’ll just have more hunters to compete against doing the exact same thing. More layers = more hunters.

No…

You want the servers populations to spread out.

And when layering gets taken out, you don’t want there to be a ridiculous queue then as well, which will be even worse.

A server can only support a certain amount of people from a technical limitation level and a gameplay level…

That makes sense.

With Toothy McToothface being on an 8 hour cooldown, probably worth it.

Wrong…

That is the case for a layered server…

Not the case for a unlayered server for phase 2… that would have limitations

I mean, yes and no. Would it be worth it to try to layer hop? Yeah maybe. But as Oldallagala brought up, you can’t choose what layer to get onto, and there’s nothing that clearly indicates which layer you’re on.

So say there’s 10 layers active, numbered #1 - #10. You are on Layer #4. The only choice you have to move layers is:

(A) Identify a friend or someone who is not currently on Layer #4 who would be willing to invite you into their group. Per Blizzard’s explanation of the hidden timers, it may take 10-15+ min for you to hop even after being invited depending on what action(s) you have been taking recently in-game. The chances of you knowing people on all other 9 layers (understanding that nobody knows WHICH layer they’re on, and it would be exceedingly rare for you to find someone on all 9 other layers)

-or-

(B) Logout and wait 10+ minutes and login again to be randomized to a different layer.

Again the running complication is that you won’t know for sure that you ended up on a different layer with B. Once you hop the first time, you also have no idea if you’re just hopping between 2 layers or if you’re actually hopping to unique layers.

It seems much more efficient and likely to catch a rare if you just setup camp for it instead of trying to layer hop, as your time “not actually camping the rare, trying to hop layers” starts to dwarf the amount of time you’re spending actually camping the rare.

TLDR: You’re welcome to try, but I don’t see how it’s going to be an effective method.

Just planning it out. If I am lucky I can get him on my first go. If not I will probably work on moving bank/DE alts into position and just log in every 10 minutes.

I guess I need to figure out the exact timer to randomize layers.

Do you want server instability? Because this is how you get server instability. People really love to give out advice without thinking for even a second.

Herod #1 Server

Totally
I think you may have taken what I said out of context.

I do not support adding more layers. What I was saying to Imonalott is that there is no physical cap or limit to the amount of players due to hardware limitations, like he was suggesting.

It’s capped for server stability in population coming phase 2.

I’m currently all in on Blaumeux. I don’t want queues for hours on end, I also don’t want a large amount of layers.

I did take it out of context, then. My apologies

But yes, the enforced caps we’re seeing right now are born from sanity (not hardware or even software limits) so that removing layering for phase 2 is actually a doable thing.

Blizzard is handling this correctly by making the additional server due to Herod’s insane population. The only people that are to blame if Herod has massive queues are the collective player base of Herod itself for being too prideful/stubborn to balance out.

Holy crap everyone this guy is a genius. Can we get this guy on the phone to the dev team? What an astute and well thought out idea. I’m sure they’ll run it right up the ladder to the executives, problem solved.
