Hey y’all, I’m trying to get my friend into WoW whose been reluctant to try it but finally caved in. He hasn’t bought the game yet, but we’re roommates so I let him play WoW on my PC to try and get him to try it out.
He said he wants a DPS class that’s somewhat tanky, so not super squishy like Mage or Rogue. Preferably melee as well. He intends to PVP more than PVE. He’ll probably go for a lot of BGs, 2v2’s, and 3v3’s.
First class that popped into my head was Paladin since they have shield abilities and a self heal. Demon Hunter maybe? Druid?
Can you give me a run down of why? I don’t have much experience with the Balance spec or the Druid class in general
Multi role specs. He can be able to try all roles in one class and get a feel of what he likes and pick one to focus on or find a class through trying them out on druid with ease. Travel form, tanky dps + heals and stealth for security. Good class to start with!

Hunter is always the answer.

Have him go and make characters with that trial option on the character select screen. You can test out a bunch and see which one he likes.

Prot or Ret both super easy and great for leveling. Prot is fun, you can pull half the zone, go ham and not die. You also have heals so it’s super cool to level as Prot Pally.
Stay safe!

Paladin, Demon Hunter, DK all come to mind.

Paladin will probably be one of the more forgiving. Great utility, great personal defensives, and good damage output.

Paladins and DKs are both pretty tanky with all that armor. Hunters and warlocks have pets that help in that area as well; though those would both be ranged (hunter melee spec doesn’t use the pet AFAIK).
Demon hunters are both tanky and squishy… Tons of leech, but their HP bars can be a yo-yo some days.
You could have your friend play some of the class trials. They’re not perfect, but they give you some idea how the class will play. You don’t have to actually use the boost to try the class either. Or just try running some of them for a few levels to see if it suits him. Nothing wrong with deleting a character you don’t like and have hardly played.

Personally I feel like Frost DK would be a good fit.
Ret Paladin would be a second good choice. Paladin is a bit more survivable, DK feels a bit more fun, imo.

Demon hunter all the way. Double jump, dash and glide alone worth picking class for.

If he’s a BGer like it sounds, ret pally or WW monk. Monks appear squishy but once you know what you’re doing they’re extremely hard to kill.

I mean, not really. Current gameplay have everything balanced. Everyone is taking pretty much same amount of damage from unavoidable mechanics, cloth or plate dps doesn’t matter.
What matters is to have mobility to dodge avoidable stuff, which DH excells in. And leech to put less stress on healers. Out of all my alts i died on DH the least amount on time since legion. And surviving stuff others cant in raids.
Ahem, there’s something in your post that you should probably not mention. It involves your character and a certain rule being broken…
Edit: Thank you all for all the replies! I’m going to have my friend read this in the morning. Much appreciated!
Hunters have pet tanks, and they’re very strong dps. He gets to chose melee or ranged. Ranged is a lot easier to pull big numbers with though. Today I was insulted twice for playing survival, so watch out for those 15 year olds.

I didn’t lend him my account or password. He’s my roommate. He was just playing on my PC.
