Do Pandaren Shaman only come from The Wandering Isle, can they also come from Pandaria? I don’t know much lore on Pandaren in Pandaria and I want to roleplay a Wavebinder instead of a Geomancer, since I see that the water is also part of the elements they use, since you bring together the four elements in the Wandering Isle. So I believe there can’t just be Geomancers out there. So there has got to be other element users, probably less common then the Geomancers though. I want my Wavebinder to be from Pandaria, but I am not sure if that is possible.
Pandaren shaman would actually fit really well, for all four elements. Pandaria has been shown to have its own unique elementals and they’re a massive part of their culture.
Thank you! There is another question I want to ask and in what way does Pandaren Shamanism differ from other Shaman races, in terms of abilites? Also would like to know how are the elemental’s part of the Pandaren culture? I don’t remember seeing anything about it why questing there.
While this is entirely just wild speculation, I would imagine that they deal repeatedly with specific elemental spirits more often than than a normal shaman would. You see in eastern culture a lot veneration to the spirit of a particular valley or river, the belief that something such as a mountain has a life essence and spirit all its own. So similarly, I would imagine that a Pandaren might work regularly with a specific, named elemental more routinely, venerating it to some extent where as other shamans might see it more as a business partner and move from one to another without much thought. If you’re the sort of shaman to move around a lot, you could also take the concept with you, the fire of your family hearth, for example, one that’s been treated well and respected for generations, and works alongside you where ever you go.
That’s really interesting! I wonder if there is some proof like that in the lore, I would love to roleplay something like that. Though it seems in Wandering Isle they did only have 4 elemental spirits as far as I know. So that could be plausible, though it could be debunked by some steam elementals I saw near the pools.
Sadly there’s just not that many Pandaren shaman NPCs in game to draw much lore from. As I said though, Animism (the concept of inanimate objects possessing a spirit or sense of identity) is a common occurrence throughout Eastern culture, which is what Pandaria is largely based off of. You also see various named elementals such as Lei Shi around, and a general respectfulness that the Pandaren show for things compared to many other races. During one particular quest chain, we also see the importance of getting approval from the spirits of the family’s ancestors for a wedding, which I would imagine shows a certain level of ancestral reverence, which again is a bit more common in Eastern cultures. How they view spirits, elemental or otherwise, differs somewhat from Western regions.
In general, as to the number of elements you mentioned, that could be answered a number of ways, be it a hierarchical system such as a large one governing lesser ones (mountainous elemental overseeing smaller earth elementals such as pebbles), or elementals becoming more sentient and powerful the older and more condensed they become (a mountain elemental being comprised of countless smaller elementals, the sum being greater than its parts).
-shrugs- In general though, being on a more personal relationship with their elements seems to fit Pandaren a bit better I would think. Fire spells coming from the help of specific fire elementals as compared to just generalized, for example, but that’s just me.
I don’t know if anyone saw some people might’ve skimmed over it, I asked a second question, but I didn’t ask it at the top so some might’ve read the first question and then answered, but I asked what’s the differences between Pandaren Shamanism and other races verisons in terms of abilites? I don’t want to be using an ability that Pandaren Shaman can’t do and its not actually possible for Pandaren shaman to do that and I get yelled at for it or something -shrug-. I doubt they could use Ghost Wolf, but I am not sure actually.
There are none. Among other things, as far as Blizzard cares to show, there’s no immediate or specifics differences that would make Pandaren as Shaman unable to do anything other Shaman can. You’ll see this reflected a lot in other classes as well. As far as the game, and the lore Blizzard writes for it, cares any Shaman is as Shaman as any other Shaman.
Hmm… What I mean is the Orc’s ask for permission to use shaman powers, and sometimes that fails, Dark Iron probably force their elements since the fire elements treatment towards them, as I saw someone post in a Dark Iron question post. Goblins bargain or something like that, what do Pandaren do in terms of that? Granted I’ve should worded my question better, my bad.
Pandaren seem to befriend the elemental spirits on a case by case basis.
If you’re planning to rp a pandaren shaman I’d encourage you to get one of the pandaren elemental battle pets and give them a name/personality so you can bring them out and RP talking to them and getting their help.
The elemental spirits of pandaria are much more playful, almost childlike, so you can choose to have a very different relationship with them than orcs have with their spirits. You could act like an older sister or mother scolding the spirit of earth when they get to rumbly, and maybe you could bribe a spirit of fire to do what you want with promises of tasty things to burn later!
I would assume so. I know it’s not mentioned much but the turtle that the Pandaren live on does infact return to Pandaria once a year so with that connect I would say it’s safe to assume that mainland Pandaren and Island Pandaren have pretty much the same cultures
I thought the Wandering Isle and Pandaria was pretty separate since Chen seemed so surprised not knowing there was another Stormstout clan. Wouldn’t he have gone there sooner? I think remembering somebody on the island saying the last time the turtle visited the Pandaria was 200 years ago.
You are correct Aoi. The wandering isle hasn’t visited the mainland ever since Liu Lang passed away. I imagine because it brings too many memories to the poor turtle.
If anything I would say their cultures are similar but different in the sense that they have the same holidays but, perhaps have different traditions. Take christmas in the US versus latin countries. Same holiday but different day. The only different holiday that we can see in game is the Wanderer’s Festival held on saturday/sunday (I can’t remember the day but it starts with S).
To tackle your question on how pandaren shamanism works Nyumbani has the best answer. Its even referenced in that one short story where Maraad battles a Korkron dark shaman at a farm (for the life of me I can’t remember the title of it so I apologize). With the elementals of pandaria heavily resisting being forced to do something unless it goes with their playful nature. Think of how we befriended the water spirit on the isle by playing a game with it. Sorta in that same vein we can hypothesize thats how pandaren elemental arrangements work out.
Edit: Its even referenced in the horde starting quests with Lore Walker Cho that if you’re a pandaren he remarks that they thought the wandering isle was a myth because its been gone for so long!
Wait is this right? If THIS is the case…I might have rewrite my characters backstory…I have that he is a Tushui Monk but from the mainland, would that be possible?
Sorry for the late response! I got a bit distracted. I can’t post links bc of Blizz’s bad forum system but! If you look up the Family Tree quest from the horde side jadeforest questline you can see Lore Walker Cho remarking to the pandaren player that: “Ah, but you’re no stranger to your past! A Pandaren from the Wandering Isle. I admit, I thought your homeland was just a legend. Pandaren from the Isle are far more adventurous than those on the mainland… it’s in your blood!”
I’l try to find another source thats confirming the isle hasn’t visited the mainland in a while.
As for Tushui teachings on the mainland honestly there probably is a type of thinking on it. However, I doubt that there is a Tushui monk group as we don’t see the mainland react to either the Huojin or Tushui pandaren in any capacity aside from the isle bit. So for that I would just say that he has a philosophy thats similar to Tushui and has joined them once they made it to the mainland.
Found some more sources. Ones more direct and the other is more describing how the isle pandaren have no knowledge of Pandaria and why they haven’t returned.
From The Wandering Widow scroll in pandaria: The Wandering Isle has not returned to Pandaria in many generations. It is presumed that the turtle, [Shen-zin Su], stopped returning to the mainland shortly after the death of his beloved friend Liu Lang.
From Quest for Pandaria page 4: " A geography lesson from years ago popped into her memory: great swaths of the southern ocean were virtually unnavigable, perpetually covered in thick mist. Shen-zin Su avoided those areas.
An unknown land of mountains, forests, and fields, hidden among the great mists of the South Seas, yet filled with her people
Pandaria ."
And " Did it really still exist? Most of the pandaren on the Great Turtle figured that Pandaria had long since been destroyed by war or succumbed to disease, or… something. Otherwise they would have seen it again by now, wouldn't they?"
