Help with Panda RP and/or monk character concepts

Hi guys,

I recently boosted a male Panda on MG H. I actually wanted him to be on MG A due to the higher pop and wanting to check that server out since i’ve heard there’s more than just ERP. HOWEVER, I made him Horde like an idiot.

So my question is, are Pandas essentially considered a joke race and not taken seriously in real guilds?

And finally, anyone got any good monk RP concepts they’d like to share 'cause I’ve got NONE. I thought of like a Dwarf brawler(maybe without being an alcoholic, just so it isn’t so cliche), who isn’t actualy a monk using Chi. Just a guy who fights with his fists like a boss. For a Panda, I have no ideas.

EDIT: I posted it twice. xD

For Monk concepts thing the pinned thread Compendium of Roleplay Guides includes two Monk guides that might be of some help. The one I wrote includes some archetypes that more or less address the character concept problem. I’m not sure if it will outright solve the issue, but maybe it’ll at least inspire some ideas of your own.

As an addendum to those I find the Brawler concept is a universally viable alternative but I also find it to be overdone, though I’m admittedly rather biased against it.

In regards to roleplaying guilds at least, I’ve only seen one non-racial guild that specifically excluded Pandaren; and that was seemingly because the leader was personally biased against them. Obviously there are people who dislike the race but I don’t think there’s such a large stigma, especially now, that you should feel discouraged from playing one. No one worth your time in the rp community should see Pandaren, or any playable race, as merely a joke.

You could always check out Wuxia films for inspiration and ideas. Can’t go wrong binging a buncha Shaw Brothers movies. Blizzard depicts Pandaren (and all of their races) with little variety save for a few exceptions here and there. So I think delving outside of Blizzard and closer to the source material that they were influenced by will likely yield more inspiration and ideas.

I’ve tried Pandaren RP in the past, at first I had a hard time with coming up with a character idea because I found most of the depictions in WoW not very exciting. Then a few years ago before COVID and you could still hang out with people, my friends and I did a kung fu wuxia weekly movie night and I was like, whoa there’s some fun concepts you could play around with for Pandaren RP.

Welcome to the community!

In my experience, things are a bit mixed. In terms of individual RP, I find that people can border on openly averse toward Pandaren (especially those of the male variety), but they’re the exception and not the rule. Fortunately, I think this applies even moreso to guilds; open prejudice rubs the community within and thereout the wrong way–for good reason. I’ve noticed Wyrmrest Horde-side has a fairly large, if scattered, Pandaren community.

The most important thing is to have a good time with what you’re doing, so I’d advise against going with a theme you’re not too excited to try out. With monks, philosophy often seems to be a core aspect. Is your character partial to the Huojin or Tushui philosophies? Perhaps they’ve dedicated their life to the wisdom of the Celestials and/or the Last Emperor and seek to embody their virtues? Maybe they’re simply a hedonist, earning their beer money with brawls at the arena and making friends along the way?

If you’re wanting to stick to something nice and simple, even if just for the time being, a starry-eyed new arrival from the Wandering Isle would fit perfectly. In fact, I find that playing “cookie cutter” novice characters that blossom into something more by their interactions with others to be the most satisfying experiences. You really learn to treasure the character and, one day, you may very well find yourself RPing out them reminiscing the old days with a friend they made during that time.

Best of luck, wherever you go!

Cool thanks! Was a lot of good info

Don’t be worried about playing a Pandaren. Depending on the theme some guilds may not allow it(One military guild I recall only allows certain Horde races for some reason). Some people may individually not particularly like the race, but I have not personally run into any problems.

I suggest just finding a good, solid guild. Most if not all you look at will be fine with a Pandaren character.
