Tonight I did Heroic CN and my parses were abysmal. I’ve watched a bunch of youtube videos on the rotation and feel like I understand what I’m supposed to be doing, but obviously not. Could anyone look through my parses and give some ideas on what I’m doing wrong? (apparently the wow forums won’t let me post links, but if you search for me on warcraft logs it should be findable).
I only looked at Sludgefist but my guess is that you aren’t using rapture properly. I cannot stress enough how important it is to have every single dot you have up at the same time while you cast rapture. These windows of time where every DoT that you have is on the target (Corruption, Siphon Life, Agony, Unstable Affliction, Haunt, Phantom Singularity, and Soul Rot) are where you will do the majority of your dmg. Ideally, you will have pooled 5 soul shards (without overcapping!) so that the instant your last dot lands on the target you can get out all of your raptures (with 3 stacks of shadow’s embrace on the target!).
Of course with CDs being what they are you won’t always do this. If you have a 1 min CD trinket then you might choose to delay phantom singularity to line up with Soul Rot, but if not you might instead choose to use phantom singularity, dump some raptures, then when soul rot comes up, dump the rest (ideally you use more raptures during the soul rot window than the singularity window as you will get a mastery buff)
This is a very important concept to learn and if it helps, think of the times when singularity and soul rot are not up as a filler phase. During this time you want to be building soul shards up; refreshing dots and only casting rapture if you will cap out on shards.
Going back to Sludgefist, you should work on making sure you always have singularity and soul rot for each pillar. As Sludgefist takes bonus damage for a small window after hitting the pillars, you want to make absolute sure all of your dots are up on him around one global cooldown before he hits the pillar. Then the instant he gains the +dmg taken buff, you spam your raptures. This is so important that it is worth delaying nearly all CDs to ensure that they are up for pillar phases. For example, don’t use soul rot on pull. The first charge happens around 58 seconds in so if you cast soul rot up on pull, you can’t get it onto the boss BEFORE he hits the pillar. You would instead have to cast soul rot when you want to be rapturing.
This applies to other DoTs as well, which you want to make sure are refreshed just before he hits the pillar so that you don’t need to refresh them when he’s taking extra damage. Haunt is weird because it has a cooldown, so try to make sure it is the last of your standard DoTs that you apply, even if that means you have a few second where haunt is not up. So for example just before hitting the pillar my last three casts would be Haunt followed by Phantom Singularity and finally Soul Rot, before spamming rapture once he hits the pillar.
your opener is consistently just a BIT wrong. you’re using darkglare before you ahve both Soul rot and phantom sing (SR + PS) on the target. this is a significant damage loss in 99% of situations.
as a rule of thumb - you wanna have 5 shards (but dont just sit on 5 shards for more than 4-5 seconds if you cap early, always helps to sit around 4 and get your 5th as you start the following) going into your PS cast every 45 seconds, cast it, and use maybe 2-3 shards on malefic rapture. Then as PS ends, Soul rot will come up, dump every remaining shard in that window; and thats your 1 minute cycle.
affliction is very much a maintenance spec that will burst for every minute or so - know your DOT timings, take the few seconds to refresh everything going into your PS/SR window, get that shadows embrace up so you can dump all your shards comfortably. refresh dots during movement
Thanks for the feedback guys. I have been trying to make sure all my dots are up for ps windows, but maybe I’m not being effective at it. I will work on being better.
I was looking through other parses and it seems that average hits for my dots are well below even the “green” parses. Is this just a low mastery thing or am I doing something wrong?
I realized today I was doing darkglare backwards. Darkglare should be cast after dots, I will fix that.
As far as PS and soul rot, should these not be cast together to increase MR? Is it better to chain them so I can lengthen the MR window?
i mean youre relatively low in terms of gear - just sim your top gear in raidbots and see what is spits back to make sure youve got the right stuff on.
this is often referred to a the “hold” rotation. WIth a 1 minute trinket like a PVP badge, this is the better way to play, but with a 2 minute trinket its not as good. For now - just to get your rotation smoothed out - id highly recommend the Use on CD route.
Cheese, its interesting to see that you don’t hold, in comparison, I have been. I have cube and igniter. Igniter is weird and I almost forget about it b4 it goes off. Lol.
I hold, save 5 shards without overcapping, renew dots b4 PS and SR, then when SR comes off cd I’ll cast both and dump 5 shards.
