Help with 4k FPS

Hey folks,

I just got a new rig and i know it’s 4k capable but when i play wow, my FPS is ~30 when i ran 1080 it was ~100. I’m unsure of the settings i should be at in order to not get crap frame rates in WoW. I’ll list my specs and maybe someone can help me out.

CPU- Intel Core i9-10940X CPU @ 3.30GHz (28 CPU’s), ~3.3GHz
Memory- 64 GB DDR4-3200
Graphics Card- NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti - 11GB GDDR6
Monitors- 2x BenQ EL2870U
Running Windows 10 Home

I don’t know what other specs are relevant to display but that’s what i am working with and cant get over 30fps…

Wow is still heavily single core speed dependent, and a 3.3ghz isn’t that, no matter how many threads it has.

3.3GHz is the base speed of that chip. At full boost speed it will run at 4.6GHz (at least) on heavy single-core workloads. It also won’t influence the framerate based purely on changing the resolution.

You’re more likely encountering a sheer rendering limit based on pixel throughput. A GTX2080Ti is a rendering powerhouse, but when it comes to actually drawing pixels it is little more powerful than a standard GTX1080. This is important as my testing during Warlords suggested that WoW was heavily dependent on raster operations in an “open” area (like looking across to Tanaan from the Alliance Garrison). Since 4K (I’m assuming you mean 2160p) has 4x the pixels of 1080p, it isn’t unreasonable to expect up to a 75% loss in framerate - all else being equal.

Usual caveats, of course - my system isn’t yours and the engine could easily have seen changes in the years since my testing.

You could try a couple of tests just to be sure. Try running the game in 1080p at 200% Render Scale to see if the performance is similar. It should be nearly identical, but if it’s higher than there’s something else at play here. Likewise, try 2160p at 50% render scale, which should perform the same as 1080p did previously.

Of course, check the usual suspects as well. If you have V-sync enabled than it’s more likely the game simply cannot maintain a solid 16.667ms frame time, which will cause it to drop to 30fps to maintain sync (certain sync overrides such as Fast Sync or Adaptive Sync can alter this). Also ensure you don’t have a foreground framerate limit enabled.

Hmmm… are you using view distance on 10? try to reduce that .

What is weird to me tho is that u cant get over 30 fps with that setup, i could get 60 fps stable with a 1080ti and worse processor than yours when i tested on mine (although i dont play on 4k) .

Besides the view distance 2 more things come to mind , the cable you are using to connect the monitor could not have enough bandwith, and/or the refresh rate of your monitor is at 30hz instead of 60hz, although that would only be the case if you are using vsync.

Are you using hdmi or display port to connect the monitor to the vga?

i’m at 60Hz and using Display port on vid card but only HDMI on monitors. view distance is on 8 and vertical sync is Disabled.

Quick update though, i updated to latest drivers and now am getting around 80 FPS. still think it should be higher but i’m fine with it for now.
