Hello. Ever since moving to this apartment, and getting Keystone Fiber as my ISP, I’ve experienced occasional packet loss. I really notice it when it happens in raid/arena. Can you help me narrow it down?

It definitely looks like there are some patterns in there; IP address wise. I just don’t know if those numbers I see are “normal”. When I do ping -n 1000 to 1.1.1.1, sometimes I’ll get back 20 time outs and 0 time outs others. So I haven’t found a consistent time or reason.

Anything you can see in that data?

137.221.83.86, 137.221.83.82, and 137.221.65.68- these IP are consistently spiking in ms (700+ and sometimes 100% timeout) and the next hop is unknown. Is that connected?

104.143.73.226 consistently shows a percentage of dropped packets too. 30% to 100%. Which is weird. If it was blocking ping requests, wouldn’t it always be 100%? What would allow it to vary in percent?

The packet loss is likely happening on the Zayo nodes in the WinMTR.

Pings to 700 or timing out is normal for Blizzard hops. Some of these nodes they own, and also those of other companies, will ignore most ping requests, but not always all. This is what causes the inflated value.

When looking at these, track the packets sent vs how many arrived at the destination.

There are some of those IPs that are local to my area that are ranging from 30 to 100% packet loss in the MTRs. Is the representative of a problem? Wouldn’t a server that blocks pings just always be 100%?

No - they sometimes just de-prioritize test packets. So they’ll ignore some of them but respond to some. Finding a problem always require you to check if the packet loss continues in future hops.

It depends. Not every router is going to be set up the same way and there’s different ways to block or de-prioritize test packets (ICMP). If you see 100% loss yes that means the router is not responding to any ICMP packets.

It’s important to look at what is happening after that point though. If you see a node with ~30% packet loss and then you see 0% or 1% on the remainder of the hops that just means that device is configured to give less priority. So in that case it just looks like packet loss when it’s not actual loss due to an issue.

Have you tried to test with a different connection like a mobile hotspot/tether or connect through a VPN to see if the issues go away? That would at least help narrow it down to confirm if the issue is with the ISP or along the normal route.

I don’t have a way to tether or VPN unfortunately.
My ISP has come out, hooked their laptop to the wall and pinged 1.1.1.1 and got 0% packet loss out of 2000 pings. So they said there is no issue on their end and can’t help me.

I hooked back up right after they left and in the first 200 pings got 10 time outs. I’ve done ping tests to the router and the gateway and always get 0%, so it seems like the NIC and my router are fine? But when I ping to 1.1.1.1 through my router or directly plugged into the wall (fiber directly from rj45 in the wall, no customer owned modem), I can often get small amounts of packet loss. It’s typically always 1% or 2% but I’m use to 0% with no hiccups in game.

The drops were really bad tonight in the mythic raid. I was getting 4%-6% packet loss from the same zayo hop. If the problem truly lies at that hop, is there even a way for me to address it? Can my ISP reach out to them or do I have to?

I think it’s only 1% loss; take notice of how the total packets goes back up after that line. The 2930 packets sent out are never recovered by the end of the test, as there is 1% loss happening on the ISP nodes I marked above.

I’m talking about this line. I tried looking over at winmtr when I would lag for 1 to 2 seconds and then see everyone move hyper speed to catch back up.

I know which line you’re talking about. But if you check the lines later in the test, you’ll see that they have more than 2598 packets (the total it would be with 4% loss). Later lines show 2847 packets. Therefore this node is not losing 4%.

Yeah I see the end point, the last two do have higher packets sent than the one I quoted. Interesting.

So should I bug my isp again or is 1 to 2% normal? Should I hope to see 0% on those local hops that are inside my apartment building?

I’ve tried many different settings for my NIC, I bought a new router to test, I’ve tried different cables, uninstalled and reinstalled leatrix latency fix, tested with and without a router, etc.

Lagging during the beam on hungering mythic got me killed twice last night. Very frustrating.

Absolutely, especially when they are so local.

Depends on the ISP. Some consider up to 3-4% normal. If those 1% losses are affecting your internet quality, then it’s worth calling.

Out of curiosity, have you checked for overheating issues?

When they came out to the apartment, he hooked his laptop straight to the wall (no customer modems, fiber to the apartment and we rj45 straight from the wall to our router) and pinged 1.1.1.1 for 200 pings and got 0% packet loss. So he said the lines perfect, can’t do anything.

I bought a new router to check for overheating or cpu router issues. The one I was using would sometimes spike to 100% for half a second. So I was worried that it was dying. New router didn’t help. I made sure it’s not overheating.

My PC is definitely not overheating. 360rad aio on my 3600x with no overclock, plenty of air flow for the cpu and gpu in my lian li o11.

This issue also only started last month when I moved into this apartment and changed ISP. I had xfinity at the last place and had no issues. New place has keystone fiber, a local company, and the speed is obviously way higher but these drops in game are killin me.

If it was a PC heat/cpu/gpu issue it’d be fps/frame drops wouldn’t it? My frame rate doesn’t dip when this happens. I’ve tried with no add-ons loaded to double check that.

Since the game world freezes, then turbo speeds to catch up, I assumed it was a network issue. Could it also be my NIC? The only thing that changed was my ISP so I assumed it had to be that.

After work today, I’m going to be able to test by tethering a phone for internet and I’ve got my hands on a usb ethernet adapter. So I can test both of those.

Lol, of course they did. The route to the Blizzard server and the route to the game servers are not the same. Sure, the local nodes in the building will be the same, but not the others.

Have you checked with HWMonitor, though?

Yeah, I have HWMonitor, MSI Afterburner, and double checked everything in bios. Fan profiles are still fine. Even updated bios and reverted to check differences just in case. Also reinstalled windows 2 weeks ago just to try that. I reseated with fresh thermal paste as well a week ago, again, just in case. But yeah, temps are fine. Got positive pressure going with rad exhaust in top, 3 fresh air pulled from front, 3 pulling from bottom directly into 2080 super.

Trying everything despite the only thing that changed when this problem popped up is that I changed ISPs.

That’s unfortunate. It’s also possible they have some QoS settings on the network equipment in the building.
