I don’t get it… I need an idiots guide to this rotation. I’m sorry, thank you <3
I wish I knew. I tried it for a while tonight on some training dummies, and I couldn’t figure out what was going on.
The Eclipse system is the idea that existed before we had Empowerments. There are two phases: Solar Eclipse and Lunar Eclipse.
Solar Eclipse provides bonuses to our nature damage (Wrath and Sunfire). Lunar Eclipse provides bonuses to our arcane damage (Starfire and Moonfire). Astral damage (Starsurge and Starfall) is considered both nature and arcane damage. When both Eclipses are active, the bonuses stack for Astral damage.
To enter an Eclipse, you must cast 2 builders of the opposite ability type. Ie, to enter Solar Eclipse you must cast 2 Starfires in a row, and likewise 2 Wraths for Lunar Eclipse. You cannot enter the same Eclipse twice in a row, so you will alternate between Eclipses throughout the fight. Casting Incarnation / Celestial Alignment abuses you to enter both Eclipses at the same time.
So if you want to do ST damage, your rotation at a very basic level would be something like: Starfire -> Starfire -> (You are now in a Solar Eclipse so your Wrath is stronger) Spam Wrath until you exit the Eclipse -> Wrath -> Wrath -> (You are now in a Lunar Eclipse so your Starfire is stronger) Spam Starfire -> Repeat.
Obviously you still want to maintain your DoTs, I believe try and align the time you need to refresh them to be between Eclipses.
Always wait for when you enter an Eclipse to cast your spenders. Starfall now does not stack, so when doing AoE cast Starfall, then if you won’t need to refresh it at all, dump your remaining AP into Starsurge. If you need to in the future re-apply Starfall, pool your AP until the current one expires.
Ok thanks! That was very helpful, its not my favorite style by far but its not terrible. I have to try it in a raid…
This is what I came here for. Thanks.
Flavorpuss - can you elaborate more for when you are within solar eclipse? As in Starsurging to empower the eclipse further.
From what I seem to gather, you want to try and enter Solar eclipse with 90 astral energy - then, pump 3 starsurges so that your solar eclipse and thus your wraths are now empowered. Spam wrath until you enter Luna eclipse, which should have you around 90 energy again, dump 3 starsurges, and spaam your now empowered Starfires until you enter solar eclipse, again with about 90 energy, dump 3xStarsurges, spam wrath. Rinse and repeat.
Does that sound about right?
This is my understanding as well but I’m a complete moron on current balance.
I think trying to maximise solar eclipse, it might be possible to use 4 star surges during the solar, then when you go into lunar, you only star surge once or twice instead of 3 times. Waiting for servers to come back up and test
Yea in ST, you ideally want to pool AP so that when you enter Solar Eclipse you can dump it all into SS and buff your Wrath for the duration of that Eclipse. I didn’t really mention that stuff earlier because I wanted to give a really basic overview of the new Balance mechanic to op.
I haven’t really tested Balance a lot and haven’t gotten on the pre-patch yet so I can’t say with certainty how the exact rotation will be
It has been covered but just to be comprehensive here is a basic rotation:
Priority single target:
- Apply DoTs
- Starfire x2
- Starsurge x3
- Wrath until Eclipse ends, pouring excess Astral power into Starsurge
- Wrath x2
- Starfire until eclipse ends
Priority AoE:
- Apply DoTs
- Wrath x2
- Starsurge
- Starfire until eclipse ends, use Starfall as soon as you hit 50 Astral power
- Starfire x2
- Wrath until eclipse ends
Advanced notes:
- You cannot always time when you want to enter a specific eclipse, but when you come out of Celestial Alignment/Incarnation, you are reset to a default state (you should see a 2 in the bottom right corner of Wrath and Starfire) telling you that you can enter whatever eclipse you want. Once you cast two in a row, you have to cycle through the Eclipses one after the other.
- ALWAYS Starsurge when you enter an Eclipse, as it empowers the effect.
- Ideally, you should refresh your DoTs in the eclipse cycle that empowers them, but this takes some practice and it isn’t worth throwing off your rotation for (or allowing them to drop).
- Use your CDs wisely. When you use Celestial Alignment/Incarnation, you should be trying to Starsurge/Starfall as much as possible, because all Astral damage double dips from the dual eclipse state you get from that cd. If you are talented into Soul of the Forest, cast Wrath exclusively during Celestial/Incarnation, because you get bonus Astral Wrath generation from a spell with a shorter cast time, allowing you to crank out Starsurges.
Awesome thanks! This is very helpful as well. I am OP, this is my druid. Hi.
you’ll want to pump more starsurges than just 1 at the beginning of your eclipse. pretty much what you want to do is pool AP towards the end of an eclipse so that when you enter the next eclipse you will dump AP into starsurge or starfall. try not to spend AP when nearing the end of an eclipse so that you are as close to full without going over for your next eclipse.
in aoe you’re gonna want to try to maintain starfalls uptime so that changes AP use a bit since you will want to try to make sure you have enough AP to maintian starfall while also dumping AP on starsurge,
the reason you want to try to use starsurge as much as possible at the beginning of an eclipse and avoid using it at the end is because it buffs your fillers during their corresponding eclipses.
Don’t cast spells outside eclipse besides the 2 to enter an eclipse. Build heavy AP (but dont let it cap) so that when you enter the next eclipse you can start off with 3 starsurges, and then finish with wrath/starfire depending on your eclipse. This is single target. Keep refreshing your dots while inside eclipse.
Every single spell is stronger inside of an eclipse state.
Aoe is the same thing, just cast starfall, and use starsurge to avoid capping AP(but still have enough for another starfall cast).
Adding in talent castable spells definitely makes things interesting. Tried specs out for a hour trying to get a hang of balancing cooldowns, and not overcapping AP.
Did they change how Starsurge works? Tettles and the tooltip made it sound like using Starsurge at the beginning of the eclipse buffs the eclipse effect for the entire duration, whereas it sounds like you guys are implying that you generate charges of the buff.
If it is charges it makes sense to save up and use x3 at the beginning but if buffs the whole duration you are better off getting into eclipse as soon as possible and then burning Astral power as it comes.
unless something has changed since i last knew…the buff that starsurge gives stacks for every starsurge you cast during eclipse
Ah that’s my bad, you are correct. I found in Tettle’s guide where he mentions it, but it was not made very clear from the tooltip or overviews I’ve read.
Hitting 90 Astral power before you trigger eclipse would be impossible unless you ran Elune’s Fury and Nature’s Balance though. Once you are in the stride of cycling through eclipses, pooling and monitoring your astral power is doable, but from a dead start, you really don’t have a choice but to work Starsurges in.
Assuming a single-target dummy fight, about how much dps should I be looking to sustain around 104 ilvl?
On my frost mage I can easily sustain 2.1k, but on my balance druid I’m struggling to hold 1.8k and my ST burst barely breaks 2.4. Both are around the same ilvl.
dont know. i havent really been practicing much and havent looked at any guides really but at 118 i was doing around 3.6k
Also, I would add that using weakAuras to set up custom notifications for when you’re in an eclipse (and which one specifically) helped me tremendously, because I didnt need to visually look through my buffs for that little icon anymore.
Once that was done, balance played really smoothly in pve/pvp and I am probably going to jump ship from resto and main it now. Boomchicken goes HWAAROOOO!!
TLDR - it’s worth your time to watch a few short vids on youtube on how to set up a custom weakaura. Changed thr game for me.
I’ve used WAs for as long as I can remember but the first thing I did when I logged on pre patch for the first time was for to a training dummy and set some up. A well set up ui that’s informative and clear definitely helps tremendously.
