Help me choose a main

Hello, forum!

I’m having trouble choosing a main. I think I’ve narrowed it down to Rogue, Druid, Monk, Hunter, Paladin and maybe DH, but I’m not sure. I may only have time to focus on one or two of them.

Rogue is cool all around. Stealth is a big plus, and Rogue has the most tools for messing with people. It’s also a strong pvp class, which I like. But it’s a pure DPS class and I’m pretty concerned about long queue times. I also like being able to solo challenging elites in the open world, and I’m concerned Rogue may not have that capability.

If I were to pick Druid, I’d play Feral 90% of the time, but the option to offspec into different roles is a big plus. However, since Feral doesn’t bring any kind of unique utility, it’s desirability is entirely dependant on tuning. I’d hate to invest into a Druid just to be declined at every turn because I usually want to play Feral instead of Balance.

Monk is neat, and can fill 3 roles, but WW feels like a glass cannon right now.

As for Hunter, I really enjoy SV, but pet AI kind of steers me away from maining the class.

Deep in my heart, I think I want to play Paladin. But I hate Divine Steed with such a seething passion that I don’t think I could stomach it as a main.

What do you all think? I could even be open to a caster, but I generally much prefer melee.

I think honestly OP you can be all of them, this expansion is very alt friendly and it’s nice to have alts for professions. The real question is what order do you wanna work on them in, and the one you choose first is your supposed “main”.

Thank you, but I meant to specify that I may only have time for one or two of them.

If you’re enjoying rogue the most which is what it looks like, I wouldn’t worry about long DPS queue times. They’re not long at all right now, and there’s plenty of stuff to get done out in the world while you wait anyway. Also the ability to solo stuff out in the world gets easier once you get more gear on every class. I had a rough time with it as arcane mage, but once I got more gear it was fine. Plus there’s so many people out in the world right now you’re rarely soloing anything hard, you can always group up for elite mobs.

It’s really not possible to choose for you because we don’t know what you enjoy more. Pick like this: when you go to log in which one do you tend to log in on the most? That’s your main, go with it.

We need more information, what content do you do? Do you have people to do content with?

Throw your PC in the air. Which ever class is on top when it lands is your new main.

It is orc law.

I’d aim to do just about everything the game has to offer. Raids, M+, pvp and solo content.

Zug zug.

Outlaw rogue and DH are the highest parsing out of those, DH has the bonus of being strong in solo content. I main BM hunter and have little complaints, I have timed a +7 on them and was 2nd in dps.

Pick what you have the most fun playing.

Rogue is pretty OP right now, but we’ll see if that changes in the next balance patch.

Rogue at least has unique utility to help it stay viable in case of nerfs. Atrophic Poison is a valuable debuff.

True, having a tank spec would be helpful for sure…

You seem the most positive with rogue so I’d go with that class.

Cannot go wrong with rogue. They are busted in allll content right now. Plus rogue is super fun to play.

Rogue is always strong at pvp but has a lot of buttons to keep track of that can be harder to do in the heat of battle: whether to blind, gouge, kick, kidney shot, cheap shot… or whether to vanish, shadowstep, evasion, cloak, feint. Plus your rotation on top of it, and nifty utility like tricks of the trade.

Not saying that as a bad thing, some people like all the very purposeful abilities rogue has, but something to keep in mind if choosing a main.

I would honestly suggest retribution paladin. I know, I know, people will crap on their talent trees, but having mained ret for years here’s why I think it is a good main and recommend it to anyone who wants to do melee:

  1. It is a very predictable, mathematical spec. You always know how you can immediately damage targets. 3+2=5-3=2+1=3-3=0. It is the opposite of a proccy spec (there is only one proc, art of war). This means you can get into a rhythm and muscle memory will kick in so you can just fight, rather than staring at your keybinds wondering which button to press like some of the more procy classes.

  2. It has very good burst in the form of “wings” where you can really feel your players power surge.

  3. It has good uses in both PVE and PVP content, with one of the strongest stuns in the game, auras and blessings (like blessings of freedom) for your teammates, and the new addition of a battle rez.

  4. It always has aoe and single target finishers baseline, without having to talent into them. So, even if you are in a single target build, you will be able to confidently deal with some unexpected aoe, and vice versa.

  5. There is very little “ramp up time” for damaging targets. You don’t have to set a lot of things up like you are an affliction lock, you just start doing damage.

  6. You have healing, and some of the most powerful defensives in the game, if not the most powerful, despite being a dps spec, between bubble, bop, and lay on hands. While people will say paladin is “squishy” it’s only squishy in the sense that these abilities have long cds, so you have to resort to healing through something—which is obviously a dps loss, so that’s a bummer. But, when considering the distinct lack of healing other specs have, you’ll appreciate it as a main paladin.

The negatives?

  1. Almost zero mobility. Maybe the slowest class in the game.

  2. Not very many options in terms of talents. The endcap talents are cool, but your builds will always feel sort of similar to one another. This can be a good thing, but also sometimes you’ll wish you could mix things up.

  3. Healing through things is a dps loss, as mentioned.

I mained rogue for Vanilla and the first 3 expansions. Got to old for it(yes that’s a thing) super fun class tho

That excites me. I like classes with high skill ceilings. My biggest concerns about Rogue are long queue times as a pure dps and potentially not being able to solo big elites in the open world.

Deep down I want to main Paladin but I hate Divine Steed so much that I’m not sure I can do it. I remember how good the class’ mobility felt in WoD, so everything after that feels like being spit on.

Got too old for it how?

I am 40, and my reflexes are not what they were. The actions per minute to play rogue correctly is to much for me, it makes the class a burden instead of a enjoyment.
