Help, Marksman/snipers, what rank are they in the Alliance/Horde?

I keep getting told they privates or corporals but not sergeants,I wanna roleplay as a sniper sergeant of the alliance but people told me that’s not how it works in the military. Is this true?

First time role playing, huh?

You could be a Grand Marshal if you wanted, assuming your character history actually makes sense and you don’t try to pull rank on unwilling participants in your RP. Your rank isn’t class-specific. The faction militaries are meritocracies.

Thing is, I wanna have the title next to my name while I roleplay. It isn’t DnD where we can image it in our heads you know what i’m saying :-/

You’re gonna need to do Rated Battlegrounds. I can equip any title from Private to Knight-Captain (and I was 6 points off from Knight-Champion, so I’m still sore about that) because I got to 1.8k rating. Sergeant, the one you’re asking for, is 1.3, with Master Sergeant at 1.4. You should be able to get that with random groups.

Erm, I have Sergeant and I do Rbgs. All I was trying to get at is there a difference in the two of being a marksman/sniper with the title. Had a random roleplay say "No, snipers aren’t sergeants.

I’d argue that since you have the title, which is character specific, you could RP it. The character has put in the work for the title, they earned it. Put a little story with it, as it seems you have, and forget the random person.

Yah… but still wanna make it true roleplay in a military standard.

Oh. That’s someone trying to tell you what you can and cannot do, because they feel like they’re better than you.

Feel free to ignore the RP police entirely.

I think they could be any rank- though i think Si:7 would be better place

That sounds like a keyboard warrior who thinks they know things about the real military.

In most modern militaries, a sniper is an incredible asset. Usually held at the Battalion level, but Officers are not allowed to be snipers as a result of the dangerous work and the risk of capture that they inherently have. Which is why snipers are, within the US Military, limited to Enlisted ranks.

However, there is no rule against being an NCO (Non-commissioned Officer, otherwise known as a Sergeant). In-fact, by the time most Soldiers who become Snipers have much experience they have enough time in service to be NCO’s themselves. To give you a rather famous and easy to find example of NCO’s being snipers, I point you towards Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart. Both snipers, and both high ranking NCO’s who died during the battle of Mogadishu and were posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor. Gordon was a Master Sergeant, and Shughart was a Sergeant First Class.

The guy telling you you can’t RP as a Sergeant who is a sniper is… ill-informed.

Are you talking about real life military standards? If so, snipers can definitely be sergeants, whoever told you no is a dumbass and knows nothing about the military.

Snipers, in the Army at least, are usually part of the scouts platoon, which is part of the HHC in an infantry battalion. They can be anyone from the rank of E1 to E7 (private to SFC, though I haven’t really seen a E1 or E2 sniper).

I’m not talking about real world militaries, as frankly I know almost nothing about them.

The Alliance/Horde armies, however, I know a good deal about, and we’ve seen incredibly numerous examples of all classes having high military rank within the factions.

I’m not quite sure you’re talking to me directly instead of the OP, but the message says it’s a reply to me so :man_shrugging:

I’m a 17 year old Night Elf and also a Grand Marshal. Oh also I’m half dragon.

Edit: This hurt my brain to type.

World of Warcraft doesn’t restrict ranks based on your specialization. Next time someone says that say (out of character of course) “This is WoW, not real life.”

A 17 year old night elf is barely out of diapers in elven terms and they don’t even have their markings.

…my night elf wasn’t half-dragon but could speak Draconic until I changed to gnome… /sigh

All true points, though I have seen a warrant officer as a sniper, though I assume they probably served as a sniper prior to getting picked up as a WO.

That said, I 100% agree to your point a commissioned officer cannot be a sniper, though I am not sure its for the reasons you mentioned and more to do with their overall roles within military organizations (i.e. leadership roles instead of individual supporting roles). The closest thing I have seen to an officer being attached to a unit in an individual capacity are the artillery fire support officers, but now I am going off on a tangent.

To the OP, do whatever you want, its a RP game!

Sylvanas was “Ranger-General of Silvermoon”.

Amber Kearnen was a Lieutenant sniper in SI:7.

FSOs don’t actually call for fire, do they? I had one that tried to and gave the most screwed up commands that made my section sergeant laugh his butt off.

Lol, probably not anymore. I was not field artillery, so I don’t know for sure but I assume they were at least trained to do so. In my experience, they normally were attached to the unit with 3 people, an officer, and NCO, and a junior enlisted. Not sure who did the actual calls in.
