Hello there,
I am hoping either mod maker or Blizzard themselves can help me out. I am an older gamers now. And I have really bad astigmatism. For me, that means I have contrast sensitivity. For me, this means certain color combinations bleed into each other. My specific pain point in WoW right now is red text on a black background. I mostly see this in the tool tips of items. And it’s damn near impossible to read. I have to zoom and enhance basically.
So I would like know if there is a way I can change all red text into some other color. There are some mods that will change some text color but not the specific ones. But maybe there is a mod I don’t know about that can.
Just so you know exactly what I mean, let’s say you are on a warrior and your get a BOA drop for another class, the text that says what classes it is for is all red. I just can’t read that without help.
If changing this text color is currently not possible, then I humbly ask Blizzard to make this QOL change for people like myself.
Thanks.

As far as I’m aware there’s no way to change font color specifically in tooltips, though you can change a lot of text colors in the chat window. I know what you have isn’t color blindness, and it would be a headache to have to change settings and then back again just to read red text, but some of the color blind options might alter the text of a tooltip long enough for you to at least see what you’re looking at.
Definitely not a perfect fix, though.
Try playing with the color blind settings, I think that is the most you will be able to mess with contrasts in game.
Yes. It is not color blindness but I have actually tried those color blind settings just to see and they do not help for my case unfortunately.

edit: Well shoot, looks like it didn’t help.
there might be an addon for it but i’m not sure.
i know you said you have contrast sensitivity but do none of the colorblindness settings help? if you fiddle with it you should be able to have it so it shows the red color as something else
Could give this thread a try. wowinterface com/forums/showthread.php?t=59784
Not sure if it works but might be worth a try.
edit: you’ll have to add the www and the . , because for some dumb reason I still can’t post links in here.
edit:2 I also believe Elvui allows for color change, but I haven’t used the addon myself.

ELVUI has a way to do it, but it’s a full interface addon… It’ll take a bit of customization/getting used to.
Where to do it: General → Colors → “Backdrop Faded” (click on it). That’ll let you set the color. Just be aware it’ll set everything, not just tooltips.
A horrifying example:

(copy/paste, replace the underscore with a dot. It’s just an image hosting site, and my trust level to post links is shot currently.)
… Obviously there are better color choices, but it means if red on black is in more than one location, this would correct the situation all at once. But as Mirasol said, it’ll take some getting used to, heh.

I am looking to see what I can find. The threads I se in other places have a similar issue with yellow text and vision. I don’t see any solutions yet though.
Yeah this may be what they have to do which is a …commitment. If it can be done at all.

Hey, a long time ago when I was more into computer games I remember that NVidia had a program that would allow you to customize color and contrast and 3d settings. I wonder if they still use such customization settings, if they still have those advanced color options through their program (or I guess they call them apps now).
It’s possible that your monitor may allow you to change color space as well. Making some changes like decreasing contrast and increasing brightness may make things more flat. Could decrease saturation. And if it’s a fancy monitor you can move away from certain color spaces, or at the very least adjuat the hue.
Ugh, finally got the url to exist in the edit. Sort of.
I may have something!!!
This won’t let you change the text, but you can change the background colors.

When you access the interface by typing /dm you can certainly set it to darkmode, but you can also set custom colors. So all your tooltips can have a different background color if you want.
To do that go to the tooltips slider and set it to 8 (custom) then select a color. Reload UI and see if you like it. You may be able to find a color that works better for you than the pure black, such a a grey or blue.
That is an easy one to use, compared to a full UI modification. You can play with the other UI elements with it too including borders and such. You can also toggle on and off each one you want - the far right of the slider seems to be the off setting.

I also have pretty bad astigmatism, my suggestion is just to look for UI addons.
My solution is ElvUI as Teranin said. That’s a preference, though, ofc. It’s not a perfect solution by any means. But I like having the control over my UI for readability. My vision’s terrible.

I just found it while hunting for things to help you so I have no experience using it really. Just what I figured out in the first 10 mins. It might be something useful though, and if not easy enough to get rid of. No major time investment into checking the options in it. I am hoping being able to set custom colors for the background on your tooltips might do the trick.

I have been playing around with the Elvui backdrop that was suggested. So far it’s a bit of a catch 22. The colors that make the red eay to see, in turn, make other colors harder to see. I will keep playing with it though. And I downloaded the Darkmde mod as well but haven’t tried it yet.
as someone who has astigmatism, I can tell you that my video card was my lifesaver. I have Nvidia 4070 TI which I can customize with the filter to adjust for contrast and coloration so that I can see exactly what’s on the screen. It only happens in very brief moments and to very specific colors, but the video card itself has the capability of adjusting the game so that I can see and read everything as I go. Now, if I could just get rid of this pesky, carpal tunnel and anxiety and settle down my ADHD I would be all set.

Hmm…is this card specific or software? I have a 4060 and the software installed. Would be interested in at least knowing where to look.

If you google the GE Force Experience software, your 4060 should work as well. Tons of filters and customizations. I tinkered with mine til I got them where I wanted them in the overlay filters, but I am sure you can google “Nvidia filters astigmatism” as well for some basic help and layouts.

I assume alt + f3 for their filtering stuff. Its not going to outright change colors for your wow tooltips though, itll be everything.
