Help a starting newbie out with some pointers

Heya, I just bought the game, and yeah, it’s not very usual to start playing a very old MMO at this time and age, alone even. But that’s what I did, bought the game, started from nothing, know no one in the game, and, yeah… It’s not easy. But that doesn’t matter. I came to Azeroth for a pilgrimage… For exploring. It’s a world that I’ve always peeked into from picture books or screenshots all these years, but never bothered to join in myself. Only now I finally feels like doing it. I wanna see first-hand what Azeroth is.

As I said before, I have no friends playing this game at this time to help me around so I plan to go solo (even if I do, I’d probably still wanna go solo anyway). I need some pointers and recommendation for a build that are the easiest to go solo, at least till I can join raids. I’d like to start as an alliance and as a human if possible, but I’m willing to change if there are some race/job/build you’d recommend so I can go all the way as a solo player. Which side jobs I need to take so I can slowly gather money or maybe build my own equipment so I can sustain myself as I progressed alone. And maybe some pointers on what should I do and what I shouldn’t as I’m starting, things I should look out for, and so on.

So yeah, Please impart me your wisdom, o’ elders of Azeroth

A couple of tips:

  1. Join a guild. Even if you like to solo and still mainly solo, it’s nice to be able to chat to people along the way and maybe even get someone to help you out with things every once in a while. It can take some time to find a guild that clicks but it’s worth it once you do. I’d say you should look for a guild that advertises itself as a social guild as they tend to be the most friendly to new people.

  2. Any class/spec combo can solo leveling content in WoW. The game is designed to be pretty friendly to people who don’t have much time to spend delving into the best builds etc. That being said, you will probably have an easier time as a dps spec. After that it’s just a matter of what you enjoy. Think about whether you like being up close to the action (in which case you want a melee spec) or a bit further away (in which case you want a range spec). Do you like wielding magic spells or thumping monsters with swords/maces? Do you like being sneaky or would you prefer to charge in? Do you like being a fortress in solid metal armor or do you prefer to be a bit lighter on your feet in leather or even a robe?

  3. Professions. You can only take 2 professions and generally these go together. For example if you want to be an alchemist and make flasks and potions, it’s good to also pick up herbing so you can gather the main ingredients for your potions. Blacksmithing goes with mining, Inscription goes with herbing, leatherworking goes with skinning and tailoring usually is paired with enchanting (because you can disenchant the items you make with tailoring and gather materials that way). However if you want to make some money along the way (not strictly necessary as questing will give you more than enough to level) then generally you would pick up 2 gathering professions (herbing, mining, skinning) and gather materials as you go and sell them on the Auction House.

There are also secondary professions you can pick up which are cooking and fishing. These allow you to catch and cook up food for yourself. Again, these are not necessary for levelling but at max level the buffs you get from food are useful for endgame content and the fish you catch can be sold for a reasonable sum.

You can also always go back and level professions once you get to max level. It’s not necessary to do it as you go. I personally enjoy it while leveling as it breaks up the questing grind but others just want to get to 120 as efficiently as possible so YMMV.

Finally professions are not needed for gear (at least until max level and even then only sometimes) as you will get reasonable gear simply from quest rewards.

  1. While you can go it alone for much of the game, there are things that you need to do in groups or that you need to acquire from other people if you want to complete certain content. Dungeons (which you can start at level 15), and pvp battlegrounds (which you can start at level 10) are group content you can do while leveling. The game has the ability to queue you into that content so you don’t need to make much effort to form a group but you will still be playing with other people. You may also sometimes needs to buy things from other people (e.g. bags which are made by tailors). You can do that through the Auction House.

  2. Final word. Enjoy the journey. It is impossible to mess up your character. Almost everything is fixable so just go out and have fun. Pursue the questlines and stories that sound interesting. There are way more quests in wow than you need to level and you can always go back later and pick up quests you didn’t get to or run them on a different character. Try the different forms of content to see what you enjoy. You might love pvp, or dungeons or raiding or becoming an Auction House trader (buying low, selling high), or mini pet battles. You can’t know until you try.

Heya, thanks for your time helping me out. I have decided on my build but I am yet to decide on my professions… Which of the 2 do you personally recommend? I was thinking of leathering but since you’re saying I dont need it to craft for my own equipment, I’m thinking maybe I dont need it at all…

As a Death Knight, leatherworking won’t make gear you can use. If you want to craft gear you can use, that would be blacksmithing. That said, you’ll get more than sufficient gear from drops. Leveling crafting professions can be quite expensive and/or time consuming. I’d recommend two gathering professions to start with. You can always drop one and pick up blacksmithing later.

You made the right decision. It’ll be the most fun game you have ever played!! Its hard to describe: it is adventurous and who doesn’t want a little adventure? Sometimes, I will just explore, if I don’t feel like questing. You’ll have your favorite places you like to visit. One of mine is Booty Bay! fun place to hang out. The scenery is beautiful like Northern Stranglethorn and Dalarian. Too many to name them all. You’ll also enjoy the comradery with other players. You may come in contact with another player on the opposite side of the world. its a unique bonding experience.

Enjoy and take your time playing. There is never a dull moment! Welcome!!

I have found that playing a hunter is the best for solo. You have a pet that helps you fight.
