Talked to my brother in Maine earlier. He says it’s about 60 there, while it 80ish down here. Sounds much better to me.

Born in Brunswick, and lived near Wells until I graduated high school. I’ve lived many places since then.

I let my father in law do the elk hunting. When we lived in Idaho, tags were like $25 for doe & $40 for bull. Now if I want to get a decent sized elk, out of state tags are a couple hundred for non-resident. We do have an elk farm near us, but the hunt fees are silly expensive and it’s not really hunting if you can walk up and pet them on the nose because they’re so human assimilated.

So we just mooch from hubby’s dad. I trade him turkey, because we can meet our daily bag limit all season by just casually sauntering across the field a half mile from our house.

But yes. The culling seasons are upon us. Time to fill the other half of our freezer chest.

I knew a guy in Wells in my past life. His mother was from Solon, just outside of Skowhegan. I love it up there.

Fall’s my favorite season, September’s my favorite month, and the Apple Festival’s in full swing at the park on a beautiful mid-70 degree day.

Life’s good! :smiley::apple::fallen_leaf:

I’ve never had Elk but I’ve heard that it is amazing. We have white tail dear around here, and I believe since dad’s a land owner and I’m kin, I can hunt on his land without a permit and all that. I’m not sure what the bag limit is doing that. I think it may be 1 buck 1 doe but that would be plenty.

I like venison because it’s all natural, grass fed, non gmo, all that fancy healthy mumbo jumbo. Lean too. Wild turkey is def different that’s for sure and is pretty gamey. It is good though when made right! :slight_smile:

Fall doesn’t feel like Fall until it’s just about Winter tbh. September and most of October are just Summer Pt. 2

You need a permit even for private land. The “reason” is that the state sells a certain amount of tags for a specified number of wild animals migrating through the state. They do surveys and estimate how many can be safely culled annually and not interfere with herd populations.

Unless your dad is personally raising them on a farm as a licensed livestock producer - tags/permits still need to be bought. The wild animals are considered a state resource. Killing them without paying is poaching from the state resource pool.

There are wild animals you can cull on private property if they are deemed harmful/nuisance animals that are an immediate danger to humans or property. Coyotes for example, can be culled without permit if they’re a danger and trying to attack people or pets. Deer & elk only reach that status if they’re at risk of tramping or rushing/spearing kiddos in back yards, eating/destroying protected subsidized food crops, or stressing out other herds like sheep,goats, alpacas when rut makes them territorial.

Your state .gov website will have all the ins and outs of what you can do. Your dad might be able to buy the tag & you hunt it for him. Most states allow that on private land.

Elk is really good, not as gamey as venison can sometimes be. Super rich, lean and a million delicious ways to make it.
