I’m returning to wow after being in a coma/paralyzed. I left with a full set of heirlooms on, Champion Herod’s Shoulders etc. I never got a chance to upgrade them past 1/4. I’m now being told these heirlooms are no longer available. Is there anyway to upgrade them or are they garbage now… to think of all the grinding I had to do for them…

Yes, they can be upgraded! If you go visit the hall of explorers in Ironforge, there is a dwarf man called Krom Stoutarm who sells Casings/Scabbards. Those increase the max level heirlooms can become.

You will be able to keep all of the heirlooms that you’ve acquired, but others will no longer be able to get them by doing the same thing that you did. I think that heirloom was replaced by https://www.wowhead.com/item=122356/champion-herods-shoulder&bonus=0 in patch 6.1 when they introduced the heirloom upgrade system.

You can also upgrade them through various events like Timewalking event and the darkmoon faire. FYI its also not worth upgrading your head, chest, or shoulders past 110 as the azerite gear from BFA is far superior. Also its pretty pricey past 110 and I am guessing if you have been away while your probably not rolling in the gold.

Yeah, easiest place to check for heirlooms would be the vendors by Kerri Hicks at Darkmoon Faire on Sunday. Those are sold for tickets and if you’re okay at the games or pet battling, you get enough tickets for a couple or few heirlooms and upgrades there in one week of darkmoon faire.
Heirloom upgrades beyond the first or second could be purchased for gold from a dwarf guy in the library at hall of explorers in ironforge and you can check there now to see if the upgrades are still available.
I remember heirloom general strength being nerfed so they’d just be like 1 ilevel above quest gear at that level, but they’re still good for the exp bonuses and filling equipment gaps early on.
With shadowlands level squish, and leveling through a single expansion of choice, I don’t have any idea how heirlooms and heirloom upgrades would work. I don’t imagine Blizzard shutting down heirlooms or upgrades until prelaunch if at all, but supposed I’d have to run around in game to see what’s what…

Oh yeah, look up ‘silas stash quest’ on wowhead. You can only do it once per toon, and the toon has to be at least level 15, but it awards 100 darkmoon faire tickets. That one quest is basically enough to buy 1-2 heirlooms/upgrades. If you happen to have a bunch of alts running around. Allied races all start at level 20, so you could unlock one of those and spam the quest with throwaway toons too I think. If you have no allied races unlocked right now, might be faster to just spam with existing alts. And maybe new toons on double XP bonus and whatever heirlooms you have could hit level 15 as fast as you could get a DK out of DK starting zone.
