Head and cape heirlooms are 1-80 as of now. Any word from Blizzard if they going to be 1-85 when Cata launches? As far as I remember Wrath heirlooms will stay 1-80 until later xpacs when upgrade tokens were introduced.
They’ll probably be updated to 1-85 later on, they don’t want people using heirlooms to level on launch day.

they started off at 1-85 but were hotfixed to 1-80 because people had them already and were going to use them leveling the first time around, I’m sure they’ll be back at 85 at some point, just not for the first characters

I picked up few pieces as 1-85 and today I noticed they’re 1-80 and was wondering what’s going on.
Players will use them regardless. You can still equip after 80, and will do exactly that for the XP bonuses. Mobs aren’t exactly a threat in cataclysm, so you’ve no problem sacrificing a few slots for more XP. You’ll level faster with the XP bonus than with whatever extra stats you’d have with better items.
They did in the original cataclysm. We were all using level 80 heirlooms to 85.

Might find the upgrades at the faire once the island opens for faire currencies… It’s where I used to get mine and some heirlooms I still needed. But I think they are not there right at the start. Possibly MOP-ish or so.
The Xp increase doesn’t work past 80, its not just the stats don’t scale.

Specifically, this will happen with the first raid release.
In original Cataclysm, level 85 heirlooms were tied to guild perks. To obtain those heirlooms, players were required to join a guild and boost it to guild level 10, which was meant to be a significant barrier to obtaining them.
In Cataclysm Classic, we chose to make heirloom rewards much more available to players, and since our intention is not to have level 85 heirlooms available during the initial 80-85 leveling, we’ve capped heirlooms at level 80.
When the first raids open, heirlooms that are intended to max at level 85 will be increased to level 85.

May we ask if there will be any notification ahead of time exactly when those raids release?
I guess in a way you sort of confirmed the raids aren’t available on release

They did in original Cata because they actually scaled to 85. The exp bonus does not apply above the level the item stops scaling at

Naxx opened on the Thursday the week after the Monday release of WOTLK classic at 3PM PST, so guessing Raids open on May 30th at 3PM PST most likely.
did you honestly believe that they would let you have heirlooms that leveled up with you during the initial leveling rush?

They were at 85 for days, so yes. Specially with how fast they’re going through Cata
The 80-85 scaling is irrelevant in prepatch, and will only be gone for like a week in Cata proper. I’m sure you’ll manage fine
