Didn’t even get a tag first time, second time got a couple cards.

It’s gatekeeping, I understand in cases where groups fill up instantly, but I’ve seen groups fill up very slowly, like 1 person every second or 2 and delist at 30 people or less, I couldn’t join with 450 but a friend could with 470.

You can’t gatekeep something that doesn’t require a group. 
I have everything from the event except 5 cards and I haven’t joined a single group.

Once an hour, at the top of the hour, every hour. So 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 etc.
I think the rotation is Org - Valdrakken - SW, but I could be wrong about that. It’s really easy to check tho anyway.
Gatekeeping would mean it’s stopping you from participating in the event. It is not.
There is nothing stopping you from flying to the portal on your own without a group. except yourself apparently.

This thread didn’t age well.
Don’t need groups for content that just requires a tag. There is no mystery behind where or when each portal spawns. If you want to join a raid group for the event, you are consigning yourself (and others) to more lag than you should.

Just use this weakaura and you will be fine.
not entirely true
especially for the orgrimar one on that first day before the hotfix
there was no sharding there and the lag was insane. to a point where the only surefire way to get a tag and get loot was to be in a group
people got DCed from the lag and the event got a rollback twice from what I saw
then there was the SW bug where every new shard caused a new portal to spawn. and the only way to get to it was to be in a group with someone who was on that shard where it spawned
if these were not factors, you would be correct
but were factors when those groups were going out
I thought auto invite was forced off for custom groups.
Since there’s a portal icon on the map where the boss spawns… you still don’t need a group
you did at the time due to a combination of a bug in SW causing a new portal to spawn with every shard and lag in Org
was about the only way to guarantee a tag in org was to group up, though raid groups didn’t guarantee it. only normal ones
and the only way to get to the new SW shard was to group up
as far as its age goes…if you only look at this event, you’re right, it didn’t age well
but the event is just a symptom of a much deeper issue, which is far more worth talking about
it’s literally the most basic form of gatekeeping to have ever existed XD
It’s not gatekeeping whatsoever. The event can be done without joining any groups without issue. No one has to join a group. Know how many groups I joined out of my 27 runs? Four. And two of them were bugged and I had to leave.
This just drama for the sake of drama. The event had many problems— gatekeeping is absolutely not one of them.
