What’s going to happen with our HoAs at the end of BFA? Is Shadowlands going to implement a new progression system that bricks it, or are we going to continue to have essences?

The Hearts will stay active, but they’ll be quickly outmoded by the new gear in Shadowlands. They aren’t carrying over into the new content. Kind of like past legendaries. Still there, but not viable.

Burn it all. No more rent a powers, I don’t want to see anymore systems like that (fully aging this knowing Shadowlands probably does).
To answer your question, yeah, the items like the Heart won be relevant in the next expansion.

From what we’ve been told, we’ll keep the heart of azeroth, and in all non-shadowlands zones it will remain active and have the same functionality it currently does.
In shadowlands zones, we wont benefit from essences/traits on the heart of azeroth (or likely any azerite gear), but will probably still wear it in the neck slot for stats alone.

It’ll max to Level 80 I believe or 90.
After that, moving onto Shadowlands like BfA never happened.
Azeroth will still bleed and instead of “healing her wounds” we’ll be too focused on current content.

Never! I’m betting the game won’t let us delete it either, so it’s just a wasted bank slot. If we can, the first thing I’m doing in SL is drag dropping that thing straight off my neck and replacing it with the first quest necklace I come across. I’ll just not use one until that point.

the heart will still work along with all the essences.
However they will not level with you.
They will not work in shadowlands content.
Basically should you twink they will be great.
Otherwise forget they exist.
They said they are trying to make a way for it to not work in the new content but still work in the old content.
Probably going to be a mess.
Either way, you will not be using it in Shadowlands content, almost assuredly.

So at least in Legion we had artifact appearances and the Mage Tower, but the HoA was just an empty grind on top of more empty grinding with essences? Great!

pretty much yeah.
They knew it was an awful system since they started and essences was their best way to fix it.
But its better left in the past and they remember why it failed so bad.
I enjoy the simplicity of just ilvl and skill.
I like what Blizzard has done with quality of life changes to the game but the tack on power systems usually feel an afterthought

It won’t be a mess, they already have shown that they can whitelist/blacklist items spells to be used only in or not in certain zones (can’t use this potion outside of BGs, can’t use this ability in arenas). It’s finally about time they extended that to legacy gear. Hopefully they’ll be smart enough to allow legion legendaries to be used on all mapIDs prior to 8.0 (maybe even BFA content since BFA is getting thrown into the 10-50 leveling experience in parallel to legion).

Perhaps the Heart of Azeroth will usher us into the new expansion, sacrificing its power to heal Azeroth whilst we cross over into the spirit world.

Nope its been confirmed to be kept just not used going forwards.
So its not that we are losing the power just outgrowing it somehow…
