G’morning all. I’m picking up on healing for both PvP and PvE, and I was wanting any advice or tips mostly for the PvE side. While in a dungeon, should I only focus on healing? Contribute to dps and/or interrupts? Thinking of working on it to enter in mythics or raids. Thank you in advance.
For PvE, do you mouseover heal or use an addon? It’s pretty important.
I use mouseover macros and grid for my healing setup.
Whatever feels the most comfortable to you as the dungeon goes on. If you’re finding yourself with lots of time that you really want to fill then add some damage. If not, focus on healing.
It’s a role where you may find yourself doing more of one than the other depending upon how the group around you is performing.
Also, do this. Mouseover macros won’t just make healing easier and faster for you but never having to change your target makes it easier to just keep a bad guy targeted and transition to and from dps more seamlessly.
It’s also better to learn how to do macros or look them up, since we’re uncertain exactly which add-ons will still work in the near future. Likely the healing add-ons will be safe, but knowing how to make macros helps in every part of the game.
Keep HP above 0
Clique or the in game click casting works just as well as mouse over macros. And it’s easier to set up. Focus solely on healing. If you get to the point where healer damage actually matters you’ll already know what to do.
Hey everyone!
I use Healbot in my healing setup, and here’s a quick tip for those new to PVE healing:
Start by running lower-level dungeons until you get a good feel for the flow of each encounter. This will help build your confidence and awareness before jumping into higher difficulties like Heroic, M0, all the way up to M2+ (and beyond!).
As a healer, it’s easy to get caught up in trying to keep everyone at full HP, but my advice is to focus on keeping everyone above 60% especially if you have strong HoTs (Heals over Time) active. That buffer gives you room to breathe and react.
When it comes to DPS as a healer (yes, we get a chance to throw out some damage too!), try applying DoTs (Damage over Time spells) when things are calm. But always stay ready to drop the DPS and focus back on healing, CC, or interrupts as needed.
So the priority should be:
Heal > Crowd Control > Interrupts > DPS
Hope this helps someone!
For what it’s worth, I’ve used Vuh Do since Wrath of the Lich King.
There are two schools of healing; doing what is needed and the meters. A ton of players play with the meters open during encounters and they play for that. Simply doing the job should be enough.
Being on a raid team is, for me, the most fun because you progress together and learn the fights, often in a painful way! With that time, you’ll notice that your cooldowns line up with the incoming damage. Progression is the most challenging part for healers, once the boss is on farm, well, easy street is your reward. it is a ton of fun with fifteen targets instead of one!
The best advice I can give you is to become proficient at reading Details. With every death, dive into how they died and why. Determine if it was your fault or theirs. If it was your fault, now you know what to look out for next time. This is literally the best learning tool available to you as a healer.
That is a great comment. I’d like to add that I see healers in my raid crowing about the one-button solution for dps. They are healing full time but when they can, they push their one button over and over until they have to drop back into full healing. It is a new tactic that I think many will adopt.
I use the built in dungeon display of the group where it shows 4 of them on the side of my screen and click my spells.
I like using the proving grounds to get used to UI changes ,etc.
Proving grounds will have a variety of situations you can quickly get to (vs follower dungeons).
Seeing how debuffs you can dispell show up, practicing watching for interrupts while you heal, etc.
I would focus on healing and keeping people alive at first. Once you become more comfortable, more efficient, you can begin to toss in DPS spells when free. But at first, I wouldn’t worry about it.
Also, dont focus too much on saving healing CDs for a scenario that may never happen. “I can’t use X because I might need it later”. Use it so you can survive to the “later”.
Of course this is different if you know a certain AE, etc is around the corner you need to plan for.
Buy a 2nd monitor so you can watch something else as you’re waiting to do stuff
You can use built in frames, but you’ll really want to use mouseover macros or a healing addon that sets you up for mouseover healing. What you’re doing is fine for beginner content, but in m+ or raid you’ll run into issues.
Thank you all for the tips! I greatly appreciate them all!
