Healers Are Now Required to DPS...Really? Really?!

Exactly! Now you’re getting it.

Did you…Get it? Hmmm…???

It doesn’t say you shouldn’t DPS either. Nor does it say you exclusively look at the party’s HP.

Oh ok. I’ll make a point of bringing that to Wowpedia’s attention so it can be included.

I did. As I said earlier, I’ve never seen this issue crop up in-game. I only see it on the forums. Truthfully I think the stakes of this conversation are extremely low. It makes no difference to me how good of a player you are, willfully or otherwise.

I have an interest in figuring out the most optimal ways to play WoW. I don’t always make my gameplay decisions based on what’s optimal (I play Feral for Pete’s sake). But I think they’re valuable discussions to have regardless. But beyond the academic(?) value of this conversation, none of this actually matters, including anything I say to you. You can feel free to continue playing the way you are and it won’t affect either of us. Truth is we’re unlikely to ever group together given that the players who care about being good players tend to run in very different content from the players who don’t. It’s a bit of a self-correcting system.

I’m in this conversation because I think the topic is interesting and the sport of the debate is engaging enough. If some novice healer sees this thread and finds what I’m saying more compelling then what you are, then hey good for them. One more good healer to show up in my queues down the line.

You look at ‘multiple health bars’. Those health bars include your party, raid, and the enemy.

‘In PvE, the healer’s attentions are mostly focused on the tank, who should be taking the majority of all incoming damage. However, careless DPS and numerous fight mechanics can cause the tables to quickly turn, requiring the healer to keep focused at all times, ready to switch targets at a moment’s notice.’

Again, this does not mean ‘never target the enemy’. A fight’s mechanic might well mean the party needs as much DPS as possible, meaning the support player needs to chip in as well. Or a mechanic causes reverse-healing so trying to heal a party-mate results in damage, so you should target the enemy and deal damage. Etc, etc.

Note to NOVICE HEALERS. Do Not Take Anything You Read In This Topic Thread Seriously.

Doing damage also reduced healing needed. It’s like preventive medicine really. Its what most health professions do. Encourage people to avoid stuff that causes issues in the first place.

Well I would say to all non-healers that the best preventive medicine is as follows:

  1. Do not stand in burning lava.
  2. Do not stand in Clouds of dark matter.
  3. Do not walk off ledges to fall to your death.
  4. Do not walk off land bridges to fall to your death.
  5. Do not run ahead of the tank into a pack of elite mobs.
  6. Do not watch your healer being swarmed by mobs and do nothing.
  7. While running through a dungeon. Look back to see if your healer is still alive.
  8. Ranged Classes Do not shoot into packs of mobs beyond tank aggro.
  9. Do not run ahead of tank to engage Boss just to see if you can take him down solo.
  10. Protect the healer. If the Healer dies. You all are sushi.

I’d even add “use defensives and CC tools to stop priority casts.”

I dunno, might want to make sure to add ‘but Holy Priests shouldn’t use Chastise, that deals damage and that’s against our mission statement.’

Yes dps/tanks also have stuff to learn and share responsibility for. For tanks you have to watch if everyone is in the boss room/healer’s mana. Dps/tank shouldn’t tank unnecessary damaage to spend resources healing so they can spend more time helping kill the boss to have the most group dps possible!

Note to novice healers, if you don’t care about being actually good at the game then feel free to not deal damage and only heal.

However if you want to get to the upper echelon of being a good healer you’re required to be able to deal good healer damage. Especially in high mythic plus keys and mythic raid they are vital to the completion of killing the boss or completing the key.

Note to Novice Healers Feel free to ignore pretentious Elitist snobs who spew out nonsense. Apparently this Warrior needs all the help they can get in a dungeon. How sad.

Comes across like a self proclaimed Navy Seal begging the girl scouts for fire support.

And this is an Orc! The “We live for War” Race. Who is pleading for a cloth wearing, fragile,
little fairy to help fight by doing dps. This gotta be a joke. Have Orcs become helpless now?

Well yeah. That’s why I group up with four other people to do them. Do you regularly solo dungeons?

Oh come on now my friend. Lol Don’t tell me your running out of steam. But ok I’ll bite.

Well at one time. Before the the Level Scaling changes. There was a time I could get on my
Holy Priest at max level. And run through dungeons collecting all the rooms while I ran through to the end boss then spamming Holy Nova to kill everything.

I would do this for fun. But alas things have changed now. Even now people can make Level 10 or 20 Twinks and run some leveling dungeons solo.

I do understand that higher level content brings with it a different play-style and tactics.
But sometimes I just like to have fun.

No. I just have a policy of not interrupting debate opponents when they’re making a fool of themselves.

Oh now. That is Harsh don’t you think? So Harsh!

Just popping in again to remind everyone that a healer who does damage when no healing is required is objectively a better player and more valuable group member than the healer who sits there doing nothing.

Okay sure. That’s something we can actually work with. You won’t really find anyone disagreeing with this position, least of all me. But this thread is about Mythic+ dungeons, not leveling dungeons.

My stance has been consistent from the start. We know what optimal play looks like and it involves healers doing damage when it is safe to do so. While it may not be “required” at lower level play, it’s always a misplay to leave GCDs empty when they could have been spent on damage. But this is no different from any other instance of suboptimal play or mistake. It likely won’t make or break the run in easier content as the margin for error there is very large. Branching off from this, a player who is interested in being the best healer they can should spend some time developing the judgement needed to determine when it is safe to do so and practicing acting on that judgement.

None of any of this matters if you don’t want to be the best healer you can be. I’m not about to force every novice or casual player to play as though they’re in the MDI. Believe it or not I don’t go around in-game looking for healers to scold. I would only make it an issue if a healer found themselves in content that they were not prepared for. (Though I’ve never been in a situation where I thought that was necessary.) My goal here isn’t to tell other players what to do, it’s to let them know what good play looks like and demonstrate why it’s better play. What they do with that information is up to them and frankly none of my business.

You get what you give. I wasn’t going to trade barbs until you threw one at me. (Or that Warrior you responded to.)
