I was in a VC run last night. Paladin tank was doing pretty big pulls since we had a mage AOE’ing stuff down. It was making me nervous but I rolled with it. They never wanted to go back and clear the pats after bosses which also made me scared. After Sneed tank pulls basically the whole hallway, but the healer DC’d at the start of the pull, so he died really quickly.
I was stupid and my hearthstone was on cooldown so I couldn’t use it. I ran back down the tunnel trying to escape but then saw the pats coming -_-
Finally I had an idea. I dropped the group and knew if I could just survive for 60 seconds I had a chance to get auto hearthed. I ran up the little cliff in Sneeds room, and as soon as the pack of mobs came in I jumped off the cliff, sent my pet in to distract them for a moment, then ran back down the cave towards the forge room. I got up on the ledge of the forge room with about 30 seconds left. At 12 seconds the mobs were closing in again, so right before they hit me, I jumped down to the goblins below. A bunch started running towards me when finally my timer hit 0 and I was rescued.
I have never experienced a moment like that ever in a video game. I was staring at my screen from the safety of the auberdine inn for like 2 minutes, with my body actually sort of shaking a little bit (which felt extra ridiculous because this is just a video game.)
I’m so glad I had the quick thinking to drop group for the auto hearth. I wish I hadn’t ever gotten into a dungeon with my hearth down, that won’t be happening again.
I am really nervous to go back into a dungeon now. How can you ever plan for the fact that the healer might just lose internet mid pull?
Man that sucks. I bet the healer got a log out of the DC and didn’t die too. But what can you do? DC are part of a persistently online game. At least you made it out, great quick thinking.
Honestly, I’m playing with one friend and we’re not gonna dungeon or cave. Got our professions and are grinding out mats while getting xp and killing quickly. I will say when I was playing solo I did do RFC once, and even that was dicey. If I do do another dungeon, it’ll be like 3-4 lv above recommended level and when I have the gear and others have the gear to do so, despite the folks making fun of high lv dungeons in chat.
If you’d died you’d be making a post today about how you should have listened to your intuition and bailed on the group when they started doing shady stuff.
Same thing happens if you raid in retail, although now you’re getting emotional and physically responsive over individual actions amongst strangers, not people you’ve committed to on a weekly basis.
There’s nothing preventing you from pretending to play HC in retail/classic. If it gives you physical discomfort its more a sign of the flawed systems the game is trying to merge than the fact that you’re reacting improperly. I don’t think anyone can tell you that when someone else makes a mistake and you have to find a way out asap in unknown territory that that’s part of hardcore territory and you’re just playing the game. Of course its apart of the game, its the fact that if you make a single mistake in those 20 seconds you lose days worth of progress which is stressful on your mind and body.
Exactly. Saw a huge argument over calling Dead Mines VC because of Dire Maul. Man, I’ve played since Vanilla and NEVER saw Dead Mines called VC. Dead Mines was always DM and Dire Maul was just Dire Maul. This VC trend is getting annoying.
If I was with a group that refused to kill the back patrols that spawn after you kill the bosses, I would simply leave. That is a huge red flag, as the back patrols prevent an easy escape (entire party can survive with a swiftness potion + run out).
I’m level 46 now and have only ran 2 dungeons total on the character (DM and Stockades). Both were smooth runs, but I see people dying in dungeons quite often, and they implement the element of relying on other players for staying alive.
I’ve just solo grinded ever since mostly, along with occasional open world grouping for harder/elite quests.
At 60 you can 10 man LBRS if you want something safe (probably the safest dungeon in the entire game with 10).
Yea, HC has a way of making things exiting haha. It’s the same way I feel when I play Escape from Tarkov, or even PUBG on those rare occasions where I’d make it to the top 10. The ol’ heart gets pumping!
I mean sure, we could go outside and/or exercise, but who has time for that!?
I have pretty limited time to play now being a bit older, so even just a level 20 character really was pretty precious.
I believe the healer and mage were on the same internet connection. The healer died but the mage also made it out. I was talking with the mage and other DPS after we all made it out.
It really did prove also to trust me instincts, and that Classic is a really immersive and fun mode.
Finally and most importantly. It’s VC. DM is diremaul.
Not if you started playing the game before Dire Maul was released!
For real though, we always just called both DM and either differentiated based on level context, or by wing since most people would say DM:N, for example.
I had never heard of VC until Classic 2019, which I think is kinda interesting.
This is a lesson for life as well as HC: don’t let other people play stupid games with your life. Speak up for yourself if you’re uncomfortable, and be prepared to take action if necessary. Because at the end of the day even if it wasn’t your decision, you’ll still suffer the consequences.
Stay safe, people. Glad you made it out alive OP, good quick thinking.
It’s kind of interesting that it even boots you like that given the daily lockout system. You’re all locked to the same daily dungeon id/instance whether you’re still in a party or not I would think. I guess they didn’t make it work like a vanilla raid lockout.
