HC Class Tier List

Bored waiting on servers to launch.
Open to discussion, but here’s my class tier list based on deathlog data and personal experience.
This is going to be based solely on safety/speed getting to 80. I understand some classes may be more enjoyable than others, but I’m not taking that into account.

S Tier - Mage
Almost in a class of their own. Even with non SSF HC, having food and ports readily available is huge and can save you a lot of time and avoid dangerous situations caused by running. They also have more escapes than any other class between nova, blink slows and IB and are generally pretty quick levelers. They also have one of the highest average death log levels/probability of hitting 60. You generally have to really screw up to die as a mage. Additionally, they’re not very gear dependent which should help in the early days of the servers.

A Tier -
Paladin - Even without bubble hearth paladins are still hard to bring down. They’re naturally tanky, have snare/debuff removal, heals, a stun and if all else fails they can bubble and run. They’re probably the safest class to 60, but they’re also pretty slow, particularly if you’re leveling a safer tankier build so they lose a couple points for that. If you’re just highly death averse, a Paladin is probably the way to go though. Bonus points for being able to tank/heal or dps in groups which should let you hit your daily allotment pretty effortlessly.

Druid - Tanky, tons of escapes and not super gear dependant. A druid can often just tank pulls that would kill most other classes. They’re not quite as tanky as a Paladin, but make up for it with higher dps, arguably better escapes and a super nice early movement speed boost from cat/travel form. They’re also not very gear dependant outside of the wolfshead helm which you should really focus on picking up.

B tier -
Rogue - One of the better escapes in vanish plus sprint/evasion/gouge etc if you end up in a bad situation. Good dps, solid control and can take out elites that other classes may struggle with. They are fairly gear dependant however so if you’re not lucky with drops or rich enough to Ah one you may struggle some. Also fairly squishy and your escapes have long CD’s, so if your CD’s are down and you get in trouble its often ugly.

Hunter - One of the best escapes in Feign death, when it works, and leveling with your pet is usually safe. Usually… The problem is once anything goes wrong the hunter has very little to fall back on other than feign death, which can be resisted and has a decently long CD. So if either happens your only hope is usually a pet stun or praying it gets aggro back, which is often unreliable. If you get a random mob or two on top of you most of the other classes above have multiple ways to get out. If a hunter’s feign death is resisted they better have consumes ready.

Shaman - The hordes counterpart is a little worse off. They’re don’t have as many ways to get out of danger, but a snare totem/wolf form is usually enough to get away from all but the worst situations. And while they are more squishy, they do significantly more damage and should level much faster than a paladin. An extra HS also isn’t a bad thing to have while leveling.

C Tier -
Priest - Few escapes, relatively squishy and a fairly slow leveling process. Wanding/spirit tap is pretty safe as long as you take it slow, but it’s pretty slow until you get shadowform. Your only real escape is AOE fear, which can often just make a situation worse. However, with PWS they’re reasonably tanky and as long as you grab a decent wand (which can be supplied by an enchanter early) are good regardless of gear.

Warrior - I know people are going to take this personally because it’s everyone’s favorite HC class… but realistically, particularly for a newer HC player, warrior is just a much harder class to play. You’re kinda tanky, but without any heals or reliable stuns you end up effectively squishier than most other classes, and since you spend all your time in melee that means you’re often sitting at fairly low health. So if anything goes wrong Warriors just don’t have much to work with aside from consumes and hamstring. They’re also the most gear dependent out of every class which will hold you back on a new server, and even after with the restricted instance runs, and tend to level slower than average.

D Tier -
Warlock - Statistically the class that dies the most, at the lowest average level in all of HC. They’re squishy and have few escapes outside of seduce/pet aggro. Their dps is good, but also seems to encourage players to multi-pull which often ends poorly. Life Tap is a trap. Few heals, no movement speed buffs, close to zero escapes… For experience players/masochists only. You’ve been warned.

Taking all feedback etc. And mostly just bored waiting on the servers

I think Priest should be much higher

I agree, hunters and warlocks, the two pet classes, should be A tier

Chime in with what you think then lol. If thought is in fact something you’re capable of.

I know people like priest, and like hunter it is really safe as long as don’t get careless and nothing goes wrong. But if you get in a bad spot I just feel like they don’t have much to turn to other than just their high EH from renew/Shield. Which isn’t nothing, but it’s just not going to get you out of the really bad situations. I think in general, being able to avoid damage by GTFO is better than being tanky and being able to slowly run away (which is another thing… priests also have no way to clear snares other than stoneform for poison)

Leveling tier based on toolkit, survivability, and overall easiness of the class during the grinding process.

S- Mage, Pally, Priest
A - Hunter, Lock, Rogue
B - Shammy, Warrior

Mage - Insane toolkit for kiting, surviving, and gold saving.
Pally - Tanky, self heals, free mount, great overall for a solo leveler.
Priest - Amazing self preservation through bubbles and heals, great tool kit for solo or group play

Hunter - Great pet class that allows for a high skill ceiling when pets are controlled correctly, but still leaves room for error, keeping it from being considered S tier. Great escape mechanisms later on in the leveling process as well.
Lock - See hunter, but with fel magic
Rogue - I debated making this one S tier due to my own excellent experiences, especially given it’s ability to just literally up and leave any situation. Its overall squishiness however makes it slower than the other S tiers, which keeps it a solid A. Solid damage, great escape mechanics later on, but can’t take on too many mobs at once, making it a slower grind.

Shammy - I love this class. I really do. But it starts strong, and just falls off in terms of damage. Great survivability, but mana hungry.
Warrior - We all know the Warrior is S tier late game. But it fails the survivability check hard during leveling, and has a higher skill cap during that part of the process.

you put warlock in D tier which is all that needs to be said about your knowledge of world of warcraft

Yeah, Classic Priest is definitely one of the safest classes to level for the patient player, especially with the Mana Regen on Kill talent readily available at the top of the Shadow tree.

Solid takes. I may be under estimating priests group utility in a non-ssf environment admittedly. I do still think that being able to GTFO is better than trying to face-tank a situation as you leave, but I may have put priest a little lower than it deserves.

I was actually debating playing a priest in HC but I’ve leveled about 5 to 60 so I figured I’d change it up lol.

I believe the only reason locks die so much is their class quests. Otherwise pretty much up there. Dots, wands and a vw tank!

Warlock is D tier in HC. They literally die more and at a lower level than any other HC class. Maybe that’s user error and in the hands of an HC pro they do better, but statistically that’s just the reality.

Thanks for your super valuable input though. /s

Priest is more or less a game of patience while leveling  I think people end up getting too greedy with chain pulling, run OOM, and then meet their bitter end

Mage is similar, which is why I think it makes me identify priest as such a high tier class for leveling. It’s all about the process

I’d rank them:
S - Pally, Shaman and Hunter
A - Priest, Lock, Druid,
B - Mage,
C - Warrior, Rogue

This just goes to show that there are absolutes, Pally is always top tier. Warrior bottom, but the rest is so much up to personal preferences and playstyle.

Edited to add Druid

I agree. I chose to take that into account in my list. I think you could argue the same for lock and/or hunter.

In a perfect situation they’re among the best. But when people get cocky and/or something goes awry, which inevitably happens, they just don’t have much to fall back on.

They die more because it’s such a joke to play one that people can’t stop themselves from overpulling. It is so easy to fight 2-4 mobs at once that people screw up juggling or fear badly without cursing the fear off and get themselves killed.

It is nigh impossible to die on a warlock if you aren’t rushing.

Everyone is leaving druid off their tier lists completely.

i was just about to say the same lmao

I love the overall feel of Shammy, but it takes so much damn time and patience later on lol. It’s either a lot of drinking for mana, or a lot of auto attacks and praying

Understandable! It’s a shame that people die so quickly on Lock, as I think they’re the easier of the two pet classes in terms of controlling. Blueberry is the real OG

I knew I was forgetting someone lol. Tbh I never played Druid back in the day, nor on any new Classic server :stuck_out_tongue:

They might have skipped druid because you got druid in the right place, I’m not sure. They are a good A class

Rogues aren’t THAT gear dependent when you get evasion at 8. Rogues have too much survivability to be B tier. I keep hearing rogues are super gear dependent. I feel like those people don’t have much experience on rogues. Every class is stronger with better gear. Being able to stealth is a game changer.
