And as we go back and forth saying, the first week’s sharding while the tourists are here, isn’t going to damage the community. If anything, it will help the community get past the crowd faster and allow them to communicate with people who’ll actually be sticking around.
The wonder’s of sandboxes. You can choose to do it or not do it.
This is correct. The same shard applies to Northridge Abbey as the rest of Elwynn Forest.
They have said in an interview and the presentation that they are investigating it. Its not 100% confirmed, but if they find a better solution, it’s one the community hasn’t thought of, because vast queues or 5000 people in a zone aren’t acceptable options for a “smooth launch” like they said they wanted.
If one of the wonders of sandboxes is that players can choose to avail themselves of all those other things to do, then I guess The Barrens really shouldn’t be sharded.
After all, anyone who feels there is too much competition can always choose to do something else, right? If they choose not to anything else, then they really have onlybthemselves to blame, right?
After all the discussion, assuming the zone can handle the numbers, server wise, I’m moved to leaning towards yes, don’t shard the barrens, because people can spread out and not do the Pools quests in sync with everything else. Its a big zone and there’s probably enough mobs to allow grinding while people move through 10-20. So that would be sharding only at the 1-10 zones, yep.
That really depends on how blizzard interprets what an appropriate population size is for a zone. Yes, by the time you get to the barrens, there’s plenty to do to seperate yourself from the pack. The final decision is ultimately blizzards and they may decide to utilize it or not.
Past that point, there shouldn’t be any justification because, statistically, people who aren’t going to continue playing generally do so by or before they reach level 20.
There were clear philosophical reasonings put in place as to why they didn’t want to use sharding, “BUT” clear financial and technical ones to why they require some minimal sharding to run their launch smoothly.
That does NOT negate the fact that Blizzard has thus far REFUSED to actually set ANY definitive geographical or chronological limits for sharding, should they elect to use sharding.
I would like to see them set actual, clearly defined, definitive geographical and chronologocal limits for sharding.
I really wish people would actually check before using this insult. Not only is it woefully and provably inaccurate, it makes me go and check your ‘credentials’.
Which as far as i can tell, (unlike me) does not include Vanilla achievements.
All of this is highly dependent on the potential starting population.
In order to figure out that, you first need to know when it will launch.
-will there be competition (i.e. a new retail patch or another MMO/game releasing/updating)
Will there be a lot of people able to play (summer break from school/vacations/holidays/going back to school.
After all that, you’ll have to gauge how much interest their will be for the game itself. Some of that will depend on what features the game launches with (postponing pvp rewards may have pushed some of those people to start later down the line).
The rest of that will depend on how well potential stress tests work during beta. If the game can handle a large amount of people without crashing, they may opt for higher server capacities at launch with sharding for longer. If not they may opt for lower capacities for a shorter period of time.
I don’t know what to laugh at more, the fact that you believe there was an achievements system in vanilla, or that your still trying to talk on a classic forum at all.
Blizzard never said “sharding will only used for a few weeks”. Stop projecting your assumptions into wishful thinking. They said they were LOOKING at using it during launch.
And, here we go again…you know when a certain number of tourists will quit Classic and when, eh?
What if they like Classic so much, more players than you pessimistically predict leaving Classic actually move on to Westfall? Oh, wait, guess me need more sharding in Westfall.
Oh, look, all those players decided to visit Stormwind too?? Oh, wait, guess we need sharding in Stormwind.
