Do you want the starting zones to be void of all life? There is such a things as too many people. Raid groups to get a fair share of Starving Wolves? Game areas shouldn’t feel like you are getting on a crowded inner city bus. Talk about immersion killing.
so long as sharding stays 1-10 and only a few weeks no issue.
the longer it stays in and the more zones it happens in…
and don’t get me started on the people asking for sharding beyond launch and beyond starting zones.
Except sharding isn’t being used because of server stress. It was stated, over and over, that the big concern is tourists. Their inflated, temporary numbers could leave half the servers dead if they left the normal population caps in place. Sharding allows them to raise that cap until things settle down.
There are going to be others who just want to check it out casually and they just want to see what all the fuss is about, they want to see what they missed.
And, our concern is, I think it’s exactly as you suggest, what’s that going to look like? What’s that going to do to realm communities , as some server populations may dwindle over time ?
That is where we are looking at using sharding in a very limited way .
As I see it Vanilla launch was like arcane missiles, a constant influx of players, since most players didn’t knew anything about the game and they were busy reading each race lore and classes.
Classic launch day will be like a pyroblast, almost all players already know what they will be leveling, so you will expect a huge blast of people entering the same zone at the same time.
by that standard you’ll want some form of sharding then. vanilla didn’t launch with millions.
trust me i’m the most anti sharding person you’ll meet, but i understand the desire to use it at launch.
Sharding will be used IF it’s needed. And it won’t be needed if there’s enough people playing on enough different servers.
It seems to me that sharding could be done on a server-by-server basis, maybe even a region-by-region basis: Servers A, P, and W need it everywhere, Servers B, L, and D only in Kalimdor, Server E only in Eastern Kingdoms, and Servers G through K don’t need it at all.
Tourists make the server look fuller than it really it. They’re like temporary water in a water balloon. Once they get tired of struggling against level 5 boars, they’re going to go back to BfA, hence they’ll be draining that temporary water out of the balloon. All you’ll be left with is a defalted, useless water balloon-- a dead server.
However, if you make your balloon out of really stretchy material (sharding), you can let the tourists fill the balloon far more than usual. That way, when they leave and take their water with them, you’re still left with a plump and shiny balloon-- a normal population server.
Since you’ve resorted to using “honey”, I can only assume you don’t understand at all what this is all about. I’m sorry, I can’t figure out how to dumb it down further for you.
