How would you know if a given character is a dev playing?

I wonder how long this thread gonna be up now that a developer’s toon was named…
They really don’t announce that they are Devs. They need their anonymity to be able to do what they do and not get harassed or worse.
On that note, I know plenty of Devs for other companies that play all the time. Some of which are friends from school or that I’ve met over the years at conventions and the like. They are people like you and me that just want to play a game in their spare time.

Ion’s character is pretty common knowledge, he and his guild were a big deal long before he worked for Blizzard.
It gets linked pretty regularly, if for no other reason than to demonstrate that he has zero fashion sense.

The reason I bring it up… there was a game, i wanna say Borderlands, where if you killed a dev or someone who killed a dev… you got an achievement.
WoW likes their achievements and whatnot, so I thought it would’ve been right up their alley.
I’ve only ever seen a GM pop up as a GM, never aware of anyone actually playing just to play
I doubt it. I don’t think the people steering the ship and I are interested in the same things.

Back in vanilla or TBC when gold websites would kill characters in cities to spell out websites a GM came through and said OM NAWM NAWM NAWM as the corpses disappeared.
Don’t think he actually showed up in-game, but everyone could see him say it.

I’m pretty sure I did at least once during BFA’s last few weeks. There was a shaman healer using a SL legendary in a dungeon. He was alternating Chain Heal with Chain lightning pretty fast, and that left me wondering how and why a little, until I saw the lego in SL. Then I knew.
Oh and I just remembered. One time I was on Mechagon Island with pvp enabled. I was waiting at the meeting stone when a player riding a giant chicken with a huge blade in his hands killed me so fast I did not have time to react. And he didn’t even dismount. He was running around the island, going super fast and one shotting everybody. Not sure what else that could be but a developer.

Not on World of Warcraft but I did meet a (GM/Dev) in Ultima online turns out you can’t afk macro skill gains in town and my character was locked in a cell for 12hrs for my punishment. =( And of course you can’t just hearth out or anything but I could roam my cell lol. This was years ago when I first got into online games when I was in middle school. I totally freak out when it happen and had a clean record ever since that day on any major online game.
