Because I grew up on MMOs like UO and I like gearing up a character. Is that something I’m not allowed to do or something?
Start playing on RP servers, even if you have no intention of RPing.
Since a lot of my old friends quit and the game effectively became a glorified lobby, I quit for 4-5 years and came back for classic, but also decided to give retail another shot and was unimpressed, my server was mostly dead and functioned as a glorified lobby. However, I also decided to try out a RP server and was quite impressed that they are much more social in general. Yeah you won’t be grouping for elite quests and leveling dungeons like in classic, that’s on the game in and of itself, but in regards to players actually communicating and doing stuff together, it’s much more so than the glorified lobbies that are normal servers.
Am I not allowed to wonder about solo players in a MMORPG?
I’m not the first one questioning what you do.
idk if id call it a social game. one could go pretty far without ever typing/talking.
everquest felt more social
I question what I do all the time /shrug
Multi-player does not =/= social requirement. Massive Multi-player even less so. I raided with someone back in TBC/Wrath who never spoke on ventrillo and gave minimal responses to guild chat or direct questions, but they were one of the best players I’ve ever met. Playing with other people does not immediately mean you have to become a chatty Cathy and BFF’s with those you play with.
Here’s a good article for you to read in regard to why MMO’s aren’t what you think they are. Why Online Multiplayer Isn’t So Social https://uppercutcrit.com/why-online-multiplayer-isnt-so-social/
As the Lebowski says, “That’s like, your opinion man.” (As is that article)
Wow is an e sport.
Now that made me laugh really hard
We talking, Socrates:
the unexamined life is not worth living
…or me on a given day:
man, what am I DOING?
Technically WoW IS still massive and multiplayer. There are other players about even if you don’t freqeuntly interact with them.
I prefer interactions that lead to more gold in my pockets and you don’t even need to talk to another player for that!
I’ve said this a number of times before. The fact we play with real people rather than NPCs just means its an option to be social.
Some people are actually nervous about speaking to strangers. I recall when I started and we had the voice chat systems, I didn’t like speaking to people I couldn’t see, who I knew nothing about outside of what their characters did - it felt odd to me. It took time for me to get used to the idea and I much preferred to use text chat because they couldn’t hear my voice which seemed somehow a bit too personal.
Im old and wiser now and don’t have the same reactions but I could understand if other people still felt that way.
I chat less because i use a gaming pad and it’s annoying to go back and forth from the pad to the keyboard. Also if im not careful the game pad will put random keystrokes in the chat so i have to completely stop playing to chat. I should use a mic. Does anyone use mic’s?
Socrates, for I am a fool.
I thought about this last night, and I had a chuckle.
We recently had a pet come out for sale around the same time as the long boi because of the social impact about 1 player.
The Remarkable Life of Ibelin, which is still on Netflix seems to me at least destroys your premise out right.
There is even an ingame memorial to this person and his impact so you telling me that this is not a social game IMO is down right laughable.
Have you forgotten it’s an RPG game? So go to trainers to learn new spells. No changing talents until you return to the city. Cutscenes. Story. No spec swapping in instances.
My, how flexible we are when it comes to parsing what part of MMORPG we want.
Times change, my friend. We don’t want to be sociable anymore. We want to be able to choose whether we are in a group mood or a solo mood.
WoW is doing a good thing by adapting to its changing audience.
When the internet made it easier to be jerks to each other.
WoW didn’t create this, it just suffers from it.
The internet was always this way, but there has been an increase in anti-social / sociopathy in roughly the last 10 to 12 years or so, and it is obvious to some people
I played Solo. It doesnt mean I dont do Dungeons and Raids. I just need Dungeon Finder and I am good to go.
It’s not that I dont want to socialize. I socialize with RL people not just in-game anymore.
It so happened I have no RL friend interested to play WoW. I had one in Diablo 4.
I just asked him to come over to my place. He used my Living Room TV with his Playstation while I play on my PC on my bedroom. I have food and drinks after the game. It was awesome. But he left Diablo 4 and I did the same so I came back to WoW as Solo PuG’er.
I am super Casual and my play schedule is random. Guild wont work on me. Having in-game friends wont work on me. However, PuGing works for me.
I know PuGing is hell. But if you are the Carrier not the Carried, it can be done. I have small goals in the game. I am happy with just KSM and it is very doable to me. Doing it for several Expansions now.
