With Twitch dropping Curse to Overwolf, seen a lot of folks worried about the shady ethics of the company taking it over, and their plan to monetize it and more than likely destroy your computer with malware…
I have a solution.
-
download directly from the mod makers. Learn how to install it manually
**edited for clarity: You don’t have to go to curseforge, there are dozens of websites with wow addon’s, including several major modmakers own websites
-
Use wowup.io
-World of Warcraft AddOns || https://www.wowmatrix.com/
-Minion - Premier AddOn Management || http://minion.mmoui.com/
-Also simple google search for your addon will also reveal many mod creators direct websites. Which gives them ad revenue to support their site, and support directly from the creator
Showing alternatives for people that want alternatives
Queue the Overwolf fanboi’s and other toxic splashers

who simply doesn’t understand
that overwolf owns the entire repository that wowup pulls from
and also who seems to think each mod maker has their addon available somewhere other than curseforge. the big ones do, but many of the smaller ones do not.
what needs to happen is another repository enters the picture, or addon creators adopt github (for example) and interfaces like wowup change to pull from there.
that’s a significant undertaking, though, requiring coordination from an uncoordinated developer pool.
no, you don’t understand
Mod makers own their mods, not curse. Atm they are using curse but they also pull from nexus mods, and wowinterface, and a dozen other sites.
Maybe before you get all toxic and superior you do a basic google search
You will look less basic
they are planning on monetizing addons and make no bones about it.
Supporting addon developers is grand, but they are known more for shadey ethics than malware. Showing some free alternatives sure busts out the fanbois of a known toxic developer
If you use mods from curseforge.com at all, you’re supporting Overwolf. I suspect they will have ads there eventually. Don’t worry though as you’ll be able to pay money to remove them.
You know that there are about a dozen other places to get wow addons right? Most of the popular mod makers even have their own websites.
There’s a huge difference between monetizing addons and giving addon developers the tools to monetize their addons if they want. It’s not like Overwolf can forcefully edit the mods and edit the files to monetize them.
This is like Twitch having monetization options for their content, it’s up to each content creator/streamer to decide if they want to enable ads, enable subs, etc on their channel.
In all honesty, personally I think it’s a good idea if addon creators had the option to charge subs or monetize their addon if they choose. If they put endless hours, creativity, and effort into developing an addon, especially if the addon is a very popular addon, why can’t they charge a couple bucks for it and make a bit of dosh off their own creations rather than have nothing to show for endless hours of creating, bug fixing, and support for their addons.
And as for any ads in the curseforge app, it will be far less than the bloat that the twitch app has.
Protip: you can just close the curseforge/overwolf apps… only run it when you actually need to update your addons. This is what I do currently; I have curseforge set to close overwolf when I close it and I have handicapped every setting in the overwolf app, so it’s essentially disabled as much as it can be disabled.
… In the future, we’ll plug in additional monetization streams including reviving the CurseForge subscription option and integrating unobtrusive ads in the CurseForge app. - from Overwolfs FAQ
From a company with shadey ethics, thats enough to bail I am showing alternatives. Why do you have to be toxic about that?
Btw, subscription and ads. Ads = malware. Use overwolf if you like, they are shadey. A fast google search will show their lack of ethics in the past. Don’t take my word for it
I am just not gonna use add-ons, Then again that works for me, I am not pushing world first’s. Good luck to those that need/want them.
