We know Jaina regretted not staying there, in Realm of Torment she thinks ‘‘You should have stopped him’’ ‘‘He never would have turned’’ ‘‘He’d still be alive’’.
But has Uther ever thought that he could have done something there? Or has there been no mention about that yet?
From the end of Chapter 13 of Arthas: Rise of the Lich King
He nodded his eyes bloodshot from exhaustion and there was a pain in those depths that struck her to the core. “I could not fight him. He is still my prince. But I wonder . . . could I have stood in his path? Said something else, done something else?” Uther sighed and shook his head. “Perhaps. Perhaps not. But that moment is in the past and my choices cannot be undone. You and I must both look to the future now. Jaina Proudmoore, you had nothing to do with this . . . slaughter. Thank you for telling me where he has gone.”
The passage Gornur cites is the key. He certainly hates what happened, but it’s not really clear that he could have made it go differently. It’s a confused kind of regret.
The thing I love about Stratholme is that it’s an actual complex event that was a turning point for a lot of characters’ personalities. Was it the right thing to do? Should Jaina and Uther have stayed and helped him? Or should they have stayed and tried to stop him? Was there any alternative?
It’s a good plot line that’s still generating discussion over a decade later.
Yeah it’s pretty much a really hard decision, I can’t blame Arthas honestly.
Considering the amount of knowledge about the plague they had back then, the little time and the shock factor of a sudden weird disease/entire city being infected. There’s not much that could have been done.
However I do think that maybe if they had stayed they could have convinced him/stopped him from going to Northrend. Then again, I don’t see Jaina or Uther having the stomach to kill the plagued citizens.
Whoa, whoa, whoa…why bubble-hearth if you’ve won? Or is that Uthers preferred method of “combat extrication,” which is how I refer to it. Because that’s what it is. Definitely not retreating. Definitely.
