Has the story fallen off?

Story quality is subjective. A story one person loves is a story another person hates. For example, look at the list of block buster movies based on income then look at which movies win the awards for best picture. There is some overlap but not much.

Story’s just fine, just that it’s an MMO so the pacing is going to be slow.

We’re always gonna get small chunks of it through patches, that’s how it’s always gonna be.

Sometimes some patches have huge amounts of story, sometime next to nothing at all.

Playing older expansions, you have the benefit of seeing the whole story in a single playthrough instead of having to wait for any of it.

We already know TWW is the start of a saga, so it’s hard to judge it by itself. It’s a foundational expansion for future stuff.

Other expansions didn’t really work with that in mind. They all kinda neatly concluded and everything within the expansion.

It wasn’t really “full steam ahead” anyway. I don’t know, maybe it is just me that after BFA and having left the game for so long I don’t particularly care about the story anymore.

Anduin being mopey and following around discount store emo elf waifu just seemed incredibly “meh” to me.

All I know is I’ve become really disinterested in the story. I remember doing all of the quests and side quests in past xpacs and now…I haven’t even finished the main lines for each renown.

In DF I didn’t care at all about the centaur or tuskarr either.

I do like the titan stuff though, like tyrs storyline in DF.

Then again, I could just be finding I have more fun playing m+ rather than questing.

I haven’t really cared about the story since they exhausted their WC3 lore supply.

But I do think goblin cartels are more fun than most of the stuff they’ve put out recently.

Correct. Not following the story isn’t what makes it bad. The story being bad is what makes it bad.

I’m a bit opposite in that the goblin story was the only thing I’ve actually had any interest in. Xalatath’s a complete whiff for me, and because TWW has failed to make me care about it, it’s kinda preemptively ruined Midnight and The Last Titan because what’s the point in the rest of the “trilogy” if you’re not interested by the first part?

It’s actually incredibly discouraging because that means the next 5ish years almost certainly won’t have much to appeal to me beyond some side content at best.

WoW does not have a good main story most of the time. It never really says much of anything substantial or real and has no theme. It’s just a series of bad guys to beat up and doodads to click on.

The closest it had to having a good story was MoP. Which was the first ever time the story said anything about ‘war bad’ and cycles of violence and had really good worldbuilding.

I don’t think anyone has ever really liked WoW because it has had an exceptionally good story. People like it because its a vibe. Because they played it for years. Because it was Tolkein with modern sensibilities on what is ‘cool’. It was always a cobbled together patchwork, but we enjoyed it despite, not because of its story.

Back in the day, people said “lorelol” because of the Eredar retcon. In WOTLK, people complained about Arthas being too visible and showing up at the end of every quest like Doctor Claw.

Now, does WoW still have good, interesting quests and worldbuilding? Yes. And I think that is what is endearing about WoW. It is all the little stories in the world that make it what it is, not whatever apocalypse we fight every 2 years.

Sometimes I feel guilty for accepting 2 or 3 quests at once without reading them and just heading to the circled area on the map because odds are I’m gonna be killing something or clicking on something glowing to collect it.

And keep an eye on Extra Action Button in case I’m handing out goggles or newspapers or something.

Perhaps I’m missing the part of the story that explains why my bags are full of combinable car upgrade parts I don’t know if I still need.

The cosmic story line bores me and I appreciate that they added a patch all about a race that has had little screen time but has been in WC for 30 years or so. I can’t wait for the cosmic story line to finish, and I hope for more patches like this after The Last Titan.

I’m also really tired of Windrunners being focal points for like 4 out of the last 5 expansions now.

The story of this game has been a dumpster fire for like a decade now I always suggest just ignoring it and enjoying the gameplay

TWW story has definitely been the best main story WoW has ever had. Is it high quality compared to non-WoW? Not really, but definitely and markedly better than anything its had up til now.

I’m still enjoying the story, I pay attention to the NPCs talking in towns, and did all the quests in all zones.

What is not Warcraft about Goblins?

was the story ever ‘on’???

yup. the writers have painted themselves so far into a corner, we’re supposed to be worried about some random void artifact made by deathwing, and giving a crap about the mental health of a literal prince wearing a suit of armor… now, to be fair, anduin has always been a softy-boy, but the point still stands!

god, i miss MoP… the factions at eachother’s throats, searching through a mysterious ancient land for powerful artifacts with which to murder eachother with, while a third party tells the factions to chill-out, even though us players know they won’t… a massive evil that can sprout-up anywhere like chaos from warhammer-fantasy/40k… good times.

ever since they started doing the ‘feel bad for the villian’ trope, it’s all gone downhill imo. but that’s just my opinion.

I’ll be honest…the story is so slow and drip fed that I don’t really remember how we got to this point.

When it takes years to tell a story it makes it very easy to lost track of what the hell is going on.

Especially when you play multiple games

First patch was great, Undermine is a miss

I love it, but it’s so daunting to play. I expected parts of the non-Undermine stuff to die faster than it does, because it’s ‘Older’. Season 1 delves, same, I thought they would be a hair easier.

But that’s just my Wrath baby side showing.

Good. Undermine is way better than whatever the first season story was supposed to be. I will take way more of cartels and unapoligetic capitalism than Anduin’s trauma therapy.
