Has the game benefitted by removing class sets?

I’m curious what the player base thinks about blizzard’s eliminating class set bonuses from raid tiers now that we’re three raids into the expansion. Is the current design and improvement in your opinion or do you miss having old set bonuses and class unique appearances?

I don’t miss having a bag full of upgrades that I can’t equip because it would break my set bonus. But with thr way azerite gear works, we’re right back to that in a way.

Sets were not perfect, but I’m not really sure I think Azerite armor is any better.

I liked the class themes to the set armors better though, now all the armor is homogenized and looks all the same no matter your class.

Azerite gear is basically the same thing as class sets, with a bit more flexibility in what your “set bonus” actually is.

Well, I lost all interest in raids and pvp when they were removed. So there’s that.

I really like the art on a lot of the sets that they have, so I don’t miss them at the moment.

Biggest complaint is the gear designs. You really can’t tell one class from the other in the same Armor proficiency. That’s what I miss about Class sets.

The current reward paradigms mean I have no interest in most of what drops from a raid, so no, can’t say I think we’re better without tier sets.

Also azerite is a dreadful abomination of a system that was always going to be impossible to balance with the way they did it.

I liked the class themes, but a lot of them just never fit to me. I like the current expansion better because I don’t have to raid just to get a transmog. Besides, I like the sets designs from the warfronts.

Yes and no.

Azerite was a prime time to address the Set bonus issues. Azerite should have been that gear that accumulates set bonuses while your going through the expansion. Think of how essences work and how you can just swap them out. Now think of how teir peices work when you get 2 or 4 peices. now take 2 Azerite peices that now have Season 1 tier uldir set bonuses that can be combined with BOD set bonuses. Now that we have Eternal palace out that set bonuses can be swapped out as needed. so now you have Azerite gear that can both equip Uldir bonuses with eternal palace bonuses. new raid bonuses came out in 8.3 but your 8.0 bonuses is still your best in slot? but that New raid bonus is rad? 1 uldir and one new raid bonus for your toon because Azerite made it so. That is what should have been with Azerite. Solving the issue where old set bonuses being better with new bonuses without sacrificing item level.

I do, however, greatly miss the class raid gear as the raid teir gear does not look nearly as good.

I liked class sets because of the feel. Legion Dk was glorious and at least ours peaked with the final one if they never do it again.

No. Blizzard removed every bit of flavor they built up for classes in Legion. One of the many bad decisions of BFA.

No, because they added azerite gear, which is significantly worse.

Tier set bonuses might have been a bit too strong sometimes, but… overall, I’d take them over the current state of things. They made ilvl increases or better stats not being an upgrade make more sense, and not require simming your character every time.

And there’s the cosmetic aspect. Class sets were pretty iconic, and let you differentiate easily between different classes. That’s gone now.

Currently, it seems like all the WoW dev time is going into the raid/dungeon mechanics, and world art. They throw RNG into everything else so people have a reason to keep doing it, and cut back on the different appearances in gear.

I wouldn’t mind if the BFA zones were a bit less pretty, and raids/dungeons had less mechanics if it meant more content elsewhere and unique looks for different classes.

Your idea is interesting. IDK though; it’d still have the problem of the only upgrade being accessible through a raid, and I’m not sure how they’d make items working for multiple set bonuses work.

Part of the reason they removed set bonuses was because they wanted PvP gear and PvE gear to be equal, and for dungeon gear (from M+) to be equal to raid gear.

Tier sets sort of screw that up in PvE.
PvP sets would counteract it a bit, but PvP set bonuses were usually defense oriented, which doesn’t help in PvE, while the damage from PvE set bonuses would help in PvP, and PvE set bonuses were stronger.

Combine that with the removal of PvP only stats, and the changes to stat scaling to reduce damage relative to HP, and you get raid gear just being better for everything anyway, unless they add set bonuses to dungeon gear and make PvP set bonuses equal to raid set bonuses, or make all of the set bonuses shared between all the different forms of content, which defeats the purpose of them entirely. Having any set bonuses just conflicted with the design goals of the current dev team (personally, I think those goals are wrong and they should bring back PvP specific gear and tier sets, but that’s a matter of opinion; I can see the appeal to having more content crossover).

I see where your coming from. Thus I am falling back on my statement of treating the set bonuses like how we are dealing with essences now. you pvp alot? get a bonus for PVP that you can learn and swap out. Hell have a set bonus learned from BG, Arenas, WPVP. now follow that up with M+ bonuses and then raid bonuses and you have a catch all piece of armor you can swap out bonuses willy nilly.

Here is how I would do it. You are only allowed to equip 2 bonuses at a time. does a M+ bonus work really well with a raid bonus? Awesome!

2 Season 1 pvp bonuses
2 M+ set bonuses
2 raid bonuses

Tier 2/ season 2 rolls around

2 more bonuses for pvp
2 more bonuses for m+
2 more bonuses for raiding.

Example: if player is purely raiding. he can use tier 1 bonus with a tier 2 bonus or he can use 2 tier 2 bonuses or he can stick with 2 tier 1 bonus. or a raid tier2 bonus with a m+ season 1 bonus.

Season 3 rolls around

2 more bonuses for pvp
2 more bonuses for m+
2 more bonuses for raiding.

Example: a pvp’er may use season1 and season 3 bonuses to just destroy others. while when he/she decides to raid he can use tier 2 and tier 3 bonuses. And swap them at will.
