Has Blizzard given up on Epic BGs?

It’s a very popular mode of PvP and yet it’s no longer worth doing. Bugs, exploits, unbalanced, dated designs, and so on. What’s it going to take to get some attention?

The continued policy of rolling out a new expansion or new zone while existing popular content festers continues to be perplexing. While I get there is a huge crowd of players that are looking for the next thing to tackle, a huge number of players continue to enjoy content that was foundational to this game and the overall experience. One of those mainstays has been 40v40 battlegrounds and yet there have been problems with this content for years and it continues to get worse.

A recent article on MMO Champion touched on a number of the known bugs, exploits, mass reporting issues, etc. that have been plaguing Epics and PvP in general.

  • Mass reporting abuse to get players kicked offline. I have some very real concerns here on reporting in general and the lack of ways to contest false reports and even understand the source of the violation. This has left lots of players shutting off chat completely for fear of being suspended or banned.
  • Toy Exploits for griefing NPCs.
  • Epic Premades - These groups have almost completely taken over some time slots for epic battlegrounds. Not only do they make it nearly impossible to have a fair game, but there is a large chance they may leave the side your own, making it impossible to win as well.
  • Numerous Design Issues - Whether it’s awful scaling on Glaives or health pools that are too high are too low for boss mobs, every other patch something breaks. Ashran became a complete zergfest with seeing what side could kill the last boss fastest. Wintergrasp has been lopsided for ages. Players joining on offense often quickly leave knowing the match is already heavily stacked against them.

There is a ton that be said on this topic, but the question is, why isn’t anything being done? I don’t understand this company any longer. When the bread and butter content that built this game is no longer important, than what is? Another Siren Isle that will be completely useless months after it’s fresh content? It’s incredible that after all these years AV hasn’t been shown a little love. Why not?

Epics are great content and they are dying and I can only imagine this is the case with other forms of content as well. Small fixes could go a long way. Please stop ignoring them.

PVP is considered a pillar but it’s definitely not evergreen. Last good thing to happen to PVP was Plunderstorm

I still do those, because I enjoy them.

I feel like Epic BGs need a whole new reward process, like the honor level grind, but make it limited to Epic BGs only.

Would be cool to get more Black War mounts or something like that.

Some cosmetics and stuff would keep people around longer.

Most just do it for their daily win for some conquest, and it’s probably the best honor grind.

There’s no need to do them at all (as well as normal BGs) once you’re geared.

Once you’re ready for Rated, they lose their relevance.

Which is sad because they’re the most fun PvP experience for me.

They feel the most like Warcraft.

I love them but when half the team quits after the first objective it really ruins it.

Yep. Basically ignoring if you even get a good match with no premades, almost all matches boil down to who wins the first fight. Losing Sunker Ring on WG for offense is the match. If you win, your chances go way up, but still easy for defense to come back.

The objectives need better spacing. There should be threats from multiple workshops. Also, the game should just win if you can’t build anything. Just killing time at that point.

Other ways they could improve EBGs to keep players from quitting:

  • Buff Kor’lok in Ashran so he doesn’t go down in 40 seconds. Make him a worthwhile second objective.
  • Make glaives more durable so IOC doesn’t revolve totally on the hanger. A glaive shouldn’t go down in seconds to one attacker.
  • Make the deserter penalty account-wide so you can’t just quit and requeue on different characters.
  • More useful rewards that can be bought with marks of honour. Make staying worthwhile.

Epic BG’s at one point was one of the few pieces of content that I did solely because I found them fun. That’s not to say that I don’t find the content I do now fun, but nearly everything I do has some reward. I did Epic BG’s without any reward in mind, but time after time, 20 minutes queues followed by 20 minutes of getting steamrolled by a premade occurred more than half the time. It was just no longer fun. Haven’t done one in probably more than three years aside from the anniversary Alterac one a few times for the currency. Oh well…

Premades happen still, but I often run 40 or 50 EBGs a week and don’t see one more than a few times. Sometimes it’s confusing because you get thrown into a group that’s just really bad at PvP. Happens mostly when I play Horde.

they wont admit they have isssues with reporting unless it was pointed out and shown in such a public way after them saying it doesnt happen to have to admit they lied and than fix it. that seem to be the only way they fix issues like this.

they need to revamp maps and rebalance npcs/vehicles to account for expansion power creep so bad it hurts. i love ebgs, it’s the only reason why i even still sub wow since no other mmo out there does mass pvp better. but sadly, blizzard is too cheap do anything about the issues plaguing this mode. it sucks.

For starters the only automation is if a chat has enough reports it can trigger a squelch. There are no automated bans. Sometimes the squelch kicks you out of the game.

Alot of the suspensions and bans are occurring in Classic Anniversary (haven’t seen ANY for Retail) as many people are AFK’ing for honor. As the SFA’s have pointed out in the CS forums the amount of games where you need to do 0 damage or healing is a high threshold.

Half the fun.

Ya something needs to be done about queue synching.

Blizzard has given up on WoW not just Epic BGs alone.

who is the current pvp dev head?

I can literally link and quote 20 Blue SFA Posts from Orlyia and Vrakthris.

You are the one who is wrong here.

it is true, and everyone knows it. what you are doing is exactly why nothing gets fixed because everything that needs fixed or is abused it defended until that thing is unplayable. if we cant point out flaws without people saying it doesnt exist which you are doing than it only gets worse.

Holy cow! That’s awesome!

In fact I feel inspired to go heal some Epic’s, hope I get AV, love that place.

I’ve actually come back from this, we lost SR, but went around taking other workshops and kept them starved of vehicles, and we won.

The major thing is there must’ve been a group of people (probably a premade) that immediately didn’t give up, and started going for counter-objectives to make up for the loss at SR.

We won, and pretty soundly at that.

For sure though, the biggest detriment to Epic BGs are the leavers.

It’s treated as a training mode of sorts, wish it was as ‘serious’ as it was when these BGs were current lol.

Rated Epic BGs are probably my dream, if that’d ever happen at all lol.

It’s not like BG Blitz could get any more clustery.

Back in the day blizzard experimented with letting players blacklist certain battlegrounds, AV and IoC were blacklisted at such an overwhelming rate that that they got split off into their own queue. Popular is not the word I’d use for them.
