Anyone feel like there are hardly any pets to fight in dragonflight? Like there are tons of critter spawns and everything but just not very many paw prints I come across.

They’re there, just spread out. Not many groups of them either. Almost all of them are new; Warcraftpet.com has identified 38 different capturable wild pets from Dragonflight.
This early in the expansion, it may be harder to find pets as pet collectors are snapping up new ones, plus there’s folks out there that kill the pets they don’t need in hopes better ones will respawn later.
If you are hunting for certain pets to capture for yourself, Warcraftpets and Wowhead can be very helpful in finding them.

I don’t have the latest expansion, but I find myself wondering how many more pets they can come up with. The options seem to be rather limited.
That was a problem in SL, as well. A few of the zones you had huge areas with no pets at all.

Note also that sometimes areas seem bare of pets because there are hidden or locked pets which appear when you do something else to reveal them. And they need that area to not be crowded out by regular pets.
Question: Is there another item you can acquire that will allow you to keep more pets? I remember in BoA, we could get an item that would allow us to retain more pets in our collection.
There’s still a limit of three per pet, but there’s no longer a limit to the total amount of pets you can have.
And as mentioned above there are quite a few conditional wild pets in Dragonflight that will only spawn when you either talk to an npc or use an item which revels where they are.

There’s something like 1,618 pets now. Blizzard does seem to be planning ahead though, they already have an achievement to collect 1,750.
Just got DF, and only got it for the pets. I’m not interested in much else WoW has to offer these days. And I 100% agree with OP, this is actually really sad. It did indeed start with shadowlands but this is even worse.
Theres a ton of non battle-able critters everywhere, but you are lucky to find 1 or 2 green paws with huge spans of nothing.
This is really disappointing. Rares seem to be rarer than ever. I’ve not seen a single one in hours of gameplay (and i’m checking every single battle pet I see).

Yeah its hit or miss with wild ones…add in fact we only got one Pet Battle for all of Dragon Island too…that is what really sucks …last two exp we have had pet battle per zone usually 4 pet battles and if new zones are added more pet battles are added…not with DF though…

With some alts who haven’t yet, and may never, started Dragon Isles, still farming SL pet WQs for Charms and stones. 15 charms to buy a stone that makes a pet rare seems way smarter than spending hours trying to find a wild Rare.

Critters that have tameable versions have a chance to be tameable when they spawn in the world.
Not a lot of things kill the critters, so they don’t respawn that often.
I agree that some old zones were full of paw icons compared to DF zones, but if you’re trying to capture a specific pet, it can help to kill all the critters in the immediate area.
This will force them to respawn and hopefully a tameable version will appear.

That’s changing in 10.0.7. We’ll have 5. One for each of the zones we have now and in the latest build the one in The Forbidden Reach now has rewards, too.

There’s a good handful of pets that are purchased from the factions as you get rep. I know that doesn’t help, as you only are interested in pet battles, but if you get bored, it’s an option. Some of the purchasable pets can also be caged up for the auction house.
** Edited to clarify: I originally lied and said all of the rep pets were cageable. Corrected.
Actually looking more like Blizzard is forcing us to get Renown if we ever want some of the pets. Valdrakken Accord, for example, sells Crimson Proto-whelp and Magic Nibbler.
These aren’t cageable and need to grind to Renown 18 to buy them.

There are quite a few wild pets that are available. Some are phase locked, others are only available during events, such as the elemental storms.
And there are plenty of purchasable pets gained through reknown, using a variety of currencies. Others use pet charms which are very easy to get. I have five alts alone that get anywhere from 0 to 30ish of them through SL mission tables per day. And you can get them from many other expansion battles.
There are also a few pets you can get in other ways. One is a quest reward, another requires you to feed an acorn to a pet and there are others I have done.
I do think we will be getting more of it all as they do seem to be putting in the effort.
Great I just don’t understand why they didn’t have 1 in each zone to begin with when DF went live…it just seemed silly not too…Great News Amayita…thank you for this info.

No they can’t…the ones from Tuskarr’s that you get your rep built up can’t be caged or sold on the AH…one of my alts was able to be rewarded from that rep those pets and when I went to try and cage it it can’t be caged…like the Backswimmer Timbertooth

Same with Tuskarr’s rep pets they can’t be caged or sold on the AH…they are earned by rep too…like the Backswimmer Timbertooth one…Renown Rank 9 to get it.
