Hard time getting into Pet Battles - Anyone else?

I wanted to get started with unlocking the pet battle dungeon teleports (mainly Stratholme for a quick way to Naxx) but man, are pet battles unnecessarily hard to get into, and complicated too.

Looking at pets I needed to have to just complete Stratholme, I barely had any I needed. Only a few at Level 25. I had to level atleast 22 pets to 25 from 1 and upgrade some to rare before I could even start forming teams for it.

The upgrade stones are way too pricey imo, and I have no free ones from the Garrison left. Pet Charms are unnecessarily annoying to farm, and getting cool pets like the Prismatic Baubleworm or the dog from the Iskaara Pet vendor is just… incredibly out of reach. Unless you had been doing mission tables in BFA/SL I guess. I haven’t.

Leveling pets manually is the most slow and boring thing I’ve probably ever done in this game besides just afking. I know about “Super Squirt Day” and that it’s great for leveling pets, but I have no clue when that day is. I’m also quickly running out of bandages and having to fly back and forth to a Stable Master to renew my pets is just annoying. Why is the cooldown on your own renew so long, and why can’t it be used on alts anymore?

It’s frustrating! I feel like there’s no point in even trying to get these dungeon teleports done, or to try a hand at the Celestial Tournament. That I missed out by not farming pet charms from mission tables with an alt army, and have over 10.000 charms just dusting in my bank like my friends do.

They also recommended me to get 2 addons, Rematch and another to see breeds. Rematch feels incredibly bad to play with and I barely know what any of it means, and the breeds just makes me feel even worse because a pet I just leveled to 25 turns out to be the wrong breed for the dungeon fight, and it’s not fast enough.

Does anyone else have this issue or am I just overreacting? Cause I honestly don’t know at this point, I’m just incredibly frustrated. I’ve already uninstalled the addons again, this isn’t worth it for me. I’ll just fly there normally.

To be honest, when they were added I gave pet battles a shot. Then thought “why is WoW including a pokemon collection minigame?” At which point I realized it was boring, and quit. I may eventually run through the whole thing for achievements, maybe. But it seems very skippable to me.

Rematch is absolutely great. I love it. It also lets you save pet sets for any trainer. So when you find one that works, you dont have to remember what you did.

I absolutely cant go without Rematch.

Seeing breeds is important if you really want to min/max. But is not needed for dungeon challenges.

Agreed. I don’t leave home without it, as it were, been using it since it was introduced. Keeping track of all those pet battle teams, being able to choose the right pet for the battle, it’s just so handy.

Also, OP, there are some strategies for fast levelling of pets you might want to research. Try checking out youtube.

Pet battles are like any other part of the game, you get out what you put in. Ive dabbled with it off and on for years when I get bored with other content. Trying to max a stable quickly can be frustrating. Check out warcraftpets. And wow-petguide. websites, both are awesome and tons of tips, tricks, and strats for fights and leveling. Wowhead search the trainer your fighting and look under comments tab, there will be strats there. You can pick up lvl 25 pets on AH too.

Pet battles are great and quite easy to get into IF YOU know where to start. I recommend running AQ40 for one of the best pets in the game.

I got into pet battles back in BFA when you could get extra Nazjatar/Mechagon rep for them. It was easier to get into it back then for sure with mission tables. I always just used the tokens to level pets, never leveled them by battling.

Even with that, I spent a great deal of time collecting good pets out in the wild. You can often get good pets for battling fairly cheap on the auction house too. Some are available through quests as well, like Ikky from WoD.

Did you ever do any shadowlands mission tables at all? Any character level 60+ can just go join a covenant and skip the SL campaign. If you join night fae it’s really easy to farm pet charms. You only need 1 adventurer (Dreamweaver is best) to level 24 and it unlocks pet charm missions. You can get about 45 pet charms every other day or so.

lots of the pets its a good idea to have two of each for the dungeons, and most the good ones are pretty cheap on ah, at least worth a look.

Along with Rematch, I’d highly recommend Battle Pet ID. It gives you some very handy information.

When it comes to leveling pet; firstly, learn their strengths and weaknesses then tackle pets they excel against (the pet trainers of Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms are great for this as you can see their pets next to them).

There are plenty of pets to find via quests (Ikky), Mob kills (Benax), Professions (Clockwork Gnome, via Archeology) or the Auction House.

Also, if you have trainer you struggle with, Wowhead is a good source of info.

If you are constantly running out of bandages then you’re probably using the wrong pets. Pet battles are like trying to open a safe, once you get the right combo, you’re good!

and in wrath

Pet Battles is like fishing. Do a little bit at a time and eventually you will get… “there”. Wherever/whatever “there” is.

I like it. I just finished leveling my Horde Pally to 70 by mining/herbing and doing pet battles. Along with fishing/cooking dailies. (Warmode on.)
Can hardly stand instanced content any more. I use 5 trainers in WoD to level up. Skipping Cymrie. Ashlei can be soloed with a Mechanical Pandaren Dragonling, and give two pets a big bump.

It isn’t something you do in just a couple of weekends.

I use Rematch to store the teams for the trainers and the dungeons.

Dont’ know of Xu-Fu’s Pet Guide was mentioned. I use his site a lot.

The problem is you’re probably tackling the hardest content right away, it was the last dungeon to be added I think.

I fiddled around with them shortly after they were introduced and then decided it wasn’t my jam. Every so often I flirt with the idea of taking it up again but just don’t have the interest.

I’ve been pet battling since MoP, and I remember the challenges and pet battle dungeons added later on to be pretty difficult, at least at the time with the pets I had.

Also you can’t heal in them (within the challenges/dungeons), so I’d recommend at least like 40+ level 25 pets, of varying types and movesets, of rare quality.

Sometimes you’ll just get unlucky, and pets will faint as a result lol. Those moves that miss or stun the target with a high chance not to land, they’ll just happen.

I’ll be honest- I have not levelled a pet manually in years.

I just buy the epic pet tokens for 35 polished charms, (the pet battle dailies you can do on alts on your account to rack these up easily) and boost the pets to 25.

Don’t level them manually, takes forever.

Also, do the pet battle dungeons in order. They teach you different tactics.

I remember I was able to cheese the last boss of Gnomeregan pretty easily, because he has a rapid-fire machinegun attack, and I was using Tinytron with all the thorns-type abilities like Lightning Shield and Fire Shield, and he basically killed himself.

The dungeons will teach you strategies like that.

Wailing Caverns first, then Deadmines, then Gnomeregan, then BRD, then Strathholme.

Yeah, I had to stumble my way into pet battling too. What it came down to was looking up what the best pets were, and finding those. You’ll probably end up using the same few pets for nearly everything:

  • Unborn Val’kyr
  • Ikky
  • Anubisath Idol

It’s more like rock, paper, scissors than Pokémon to be honest. Find the specific counter and use that, otherwise you won’t have much luck.

Granted, I’m not a huge pet battler. My knowledge is very limited. I’ve found myself having more fun simply collecting the pets themselves than actually battling them.

If you want to get into pet battles, level up a rare quality SB breed Lost Limb (found in the wild in the Maw) and wait for the Squirt garrison trainer to be active during pet battle week.

Lost Limb can solo Squirt’s team and you’ll be leveling up pets super quickly. While waiting for Super Squirt Day, you can collect whatever pets you’ll need for the dungeons and just no-life fighting Squirt endlessly during that day.

I’ve said this before:

Blizz needs to delete pet levels. The entire concept is absurd. Why do you think they capped levels at 25 ages ago? Because imagine leveling 1500 pets each expac. Lmao. It’s beyond stupid that pet levels still exist. Is there a single instance where anything within the pet battle arena would be doable with a sub-level 25 pet? No. No there isn’t.

Pet leveling needed to be a thing when battle pets were new because the system had very little else going for it and there were only a few battle pets in the game. So the level system added some needed depth. Ok. But that was then. Now? There’s heaps of content and depth to the battle pet system in wow. Pet levels now merely makes the system unnecessarily bloated and blocks newer players from getting into it to begin with much as what has happened with the OP. Shocker.

The pet battle system needs a pruning.

Yeah but the level up items are another currency to grind, and you know we need more currencies.

It is pretty easy I just took 10mil gold off one of my banks and bought all the pets. With so many casuals earning 2-5mil gold per month it is far less work to buy than level all those pets.

Sadly, the only fast way to level pets is getting a maxed Garrison from WoD and you need 2 certain pets and the one that you wanna level.

Best to wait for 50% more pet exp event.
