Its not going to be perfect but it looks like it will be close enough. The sharding isn't a big deal at all at the start and anyone making a fuss about it is just being contentious. Love that they're going to do a progressive type raid release, might need to tun some of the raids a little with 1.12 at least until Naxx release. It looks really good Blizz!! Great job!
The game doesn't really start until mid 20's and at that point and by that time most of the sharding will be gone and not needed, as a lot of players won't make it past level 10 and after the initial rush and the initial burst of nostalgia a lot will quit as well. Community isn't built in a day or a week, its built over months and years.
Now the waiting game....
I agree, Ive been posting in Wall of No Posts since they started over 10 years ago. Fighting with Snowfox and other MVPs over why ONE day they will do Classic servers and having people laugh and make fun of those of us who have been fighting this for years.
Well, We were right, its coming. May not be perfect, but its coming. Over time I suspect, like other Classic servers in other games it will get better and future servers will be even better.
Dont be unrealistic in your expectations and understand it wont be 100% perfect and you can find some enjoyment.
P.S. I am a neutral sharder, I dont care either way.

To you perhaps. Though, it is a big deal as it's poised to ruin the most social gaming experience that was ever created.

And by level 20 imagine how many lost social experiences there will be. Hundreds? Thousands? How many potential friends I won't make. Sounds like a great system for an MMO...

The loot trading isn't a big deal either, unlike what some people will tell you.
it is a big deal as it's poised to ruin the most social gaming experience that was ever created.
How dramatic. It's only for the first few levels.

Imagine the alternative, imagine how many lost social experiences there will be when people can't log in for hours? Hundreds? Thousands? MILLIONS?!? Gamers are oppressed by this decision, truly.
You are spot on with your post.
Those that complain that sharding ruins the initial social experience are being completely 100% disingenuous.
They can still communicate with everyone in the zone on their server (regardless of shard), group with anyone on their server (regardless of shard), etc...
The only thing it prevents is hundreds of people all being jackholes to eachother fighting for mobs in the tiny starting areas before getting to full zones full of quests. Nothing wrong with that at all.
But they can't see anything past their "REEEEE SHARDING!!!" rage.

Wait 2 weeks then youll be fine.

It stops at level 10 from the information we have gathered. This can be done in one session and then you will never think about it ever again. Or you could just wait a couple weeks like I said before and get away from it all together.
I watched the blizzcon classic panel, it was impressive. Sounds like they have smart passionate people working on the project.
New code is definitely a smart move rather than patch old code. Using sharding in the starter areas sounds like an okay thing.
Definitely a better solution than increasing the spawn rate. This solution doesnt reduce bottleneck, lag, crashes like sharding will.
I want the classic experience as much as anyone. The crashes, lag, lines for spawns in the starting zone isn't what I remember fondly.

Overall, I agree with you. I don't think sharding for only the starting areas where PvP won't be happening will be detrimental to the game or the experience. That being said, I worry that somebody at Blizzard may get the idea that it worked fine, so it gets implemented elsewhere in the game.
Agreed! I think people are blowing the sharding thing way out of proportion. I was there for the launch of vanilla and the game was basically unplayable for the first week so sharding seems like a good solution.
I do think however blizzard should come out with a definitive statement that sharding will not be used past the initial launch. I think that would put a lot of peoples minds at ease.

Exactly! "we'll only use it for two weeks at the beginning, in starter areas; or, we'll give you 6 months free game time!" That would get my attention! Sadly, though, that time would go to waste; because, it meant sharding was still in the game! :(
"anyone making a fuss about it is just being contentious"
I will play with or without sharding - I just don't want it in the game. My opinion is bring on the ques if the servers can't handle the initial push.
