This game is turning into one big hamster wheel . You play seasonally…you work to get your stuff then the next season comes out all you progress is wiped then the next season starts and we do it all again…and we do it 4 times…what’s the point why can’t we keep our stuff…this is suppose to be a trilogy…
I mean WoW has always been a hamster wheel. Instead in the past, you’d sort of reset with new named patches / raid tiers instead of seasons. There are MMO’s out there with a different philosophy however, such as GW2. I have a friend whose main game is GW2 and he supposedly still uses his legendary items he got when the game launched. Each system has its pros and cons, a pro of GW2’s system being that you can really take breaks from the game and come back and never feel left behind since there’s no new level caps or item level changes.
However, a con of this system I believe is for some players it feels like there’s no real reason to continue. Unless you’re absolutely invested in the story and transmog etc, you kind of just take a break from the game and never come back. You reach the peak of power and that’s it. Though there’s new content for you to experience, knowing you’re at the height of power and there’s no actual reason to progress or change your character can be a lack of incentive for some. Guess it just depends on what you play for.
I binned pretty much all the stuff I’d gotten from Naxx in WotLK when Ulduar came around. Then most of that when ToC released, and finally all of that when ICC dropped. When Cataclysm rolled around, my Icecrown epics were replaced with quest greens. Been that way for years. There’s just more structure around it now.
BUt it based on loss of gear of death. If you blow up, you need to replace it.
Want to spice up pve…well go to more open pvp zones to run things like sites. the players add the thrills you seek lol. Also it pays more and has the better gear.
It’s the nature of the game. I don’t mind it. As someone who is primarily a delver, all my best gear is crafted. I’m keeping it all and will simply recraft it as I get new sparks next season.
WoW has been a seasonal game since Cata at the latest (I didn’t play endgame before then so I don’t want to assume with partial information).
We just called them Raid Tiers back then since that’s what was relevant.
(In fairness we called them that from the start, but earlier versions of WoW didn’t really wipe progress and instead expected you to work your way up from the ground).
It’s not new. Nor are the currency resets.
I do feel that the distinction between seasons has grown with these last couple expansions though. There were smaller gaps and more overlap in the past.
Complaints about seasonal resets never seem to think about how awful it would be for new/returning players to work through those gear levels. Or even start up an alt.
I mean, if you think about it, every expansion is a hamster wheel. Every season is a hamster wheel. We’ve been doing this to ourselves for the better part of 15 years. Those high-end purple items that we are wearing at the end of the expansion are almost immediately replaced by quest greens 30 minutes into the new one. it’s just part of this big roller coaster. The only difference is instead of getting off at the end of the ride we stay buckled in just to see if the ride has changed.
If your goal is to fill in collections or currencies that never reset or become obsolete, I’d recommend finding a horizontal progression MMO like GW2 or ESO. WoW has always been a hamster wheel that invalidates your old progress with new progress.
The tier to trash pipeline has never been more expedient.
I’ve sorta stepped off this hamster wheel and just collect low hanging fruit from each game mode. Getting the finest ilvls just for it all to go in the dumpster again no longer interests me.
Catering to transient and new players by shortcutting to endgame participation via seasonal mechanics is what Blizz decided was better for the health of the game long ago. Although I personally enjoyed the progressive growth of needing to move from tier to tier of content to reach the end, I would guess that Blizz was probably right that this path has kept player numbers higher for a longer period of time.
So you’d like to be able to grind enough gilded crests right now that you can instantly max out hero/mythic track gear as soon as the season opens? I feel like it’s obvious why that’s bad.
Back when we had valor in the early expansions, that also reset each tier. This is the no different.
