Sylvanas burns down Teldrassil, seemingly a warmonger. Horde leaders who all fought against Garrosh, somehow go with this.
Later revealed that Sylvanas didn’t commit this for Horde, but rather… to send souls to hell to be used as fuel for an evil overlord of death?
Then she has sudden change of heart and wants to switch sides.
So in period of 2 years, they painted her as a bloothirsty Warlord (Garrosh 2.0), then as servant of Jailer (Arthas 2.0), and now they want to redeem her like nothing happened.
Oh boy, the mental gymnastics happening in writing room are beyond me.
Do you have some kind of stick, and every 6 months someone else gets to pick story direction?
Well she doesn’t really have a change of heart. She just finally understands that while she thought of herself as a partner in this plan with the Jailer, she was in fact nothing more than a pawn to him. And the last thing she will accept herself being is a pawn to someone else.
This does not change the parts where she serves him faithfully for entire expansion, minus 1 cinematic where they throw in some doubt, but then very next cinematic she’s wreaking havoc in Ardenweald and saying they can’t stop the inevitable.
And I don’t even know if I want to see how they’ll try to redeem her when everyone and everything wants her head. They’ll have to turn all lore characters into pure pacifists who hate violence and don’t believe in giving out justice.
Or go with some dumb narrative of “we need her!”
Oh god, I just… was so looking forward to seeing this unravel, and it’s beyond disappointing.
No creativity, poor story writing. Horrid.
We all knew the failed superhero comic book writers responsible for this games story would end up train wrecking the story, people were saying long before Shadowlands that Sylvanis is Blizzards favourite character and they are going to force a redemption arc as soon as a new villain is established.
Just a friendly reminder Nathanos was unironically a comic writer self inserting as her lover. They are obsessed.
That is because she thought she was a partner with him in this scheme. In spite of a far more powerful ally being just cast aside (Sire) when his part was done, she somehow fooled herself into believing she was more important. She didn’t have a change of heart, she freaked out over the word “serve”. Like that wasn’t exactly what she had been doing all this time.
So this kinda excuses anything she’s done? She commits genocide, causes death on both factions, to feed this guy souls. This is like straight up capital punishment.
Where did I say it excuses her actions? I said your statement that “she suddenly has a change of heart” was wrong. She didn’t attack the Jailer because suddenly she was a good guy, she did it because she suddenly released she wasn’t going to be part of this grand plan.
Seriously, people need to start reading the posts they are responding to…
You mean only a part of sylvanas that was manipulated into making these choices? She was only half of who she was, and the jailer chose the half that would be best manipulated by his goals.
She still had free will, she could have made a different decision at any point in time to not work with the Jailer. I mean she sure was free enough to attack him at the very end. Her only having half her soul doesn’t excuse her for what she did, it might put it in better context but the fact is she wasn’t forced into servitude.
And that doesn’t change the fact that she clearly has free will or did the Jailer command her to betray him?!? You can’t have it both ways. If she had the ability to betray him at the end, she had it the entire time.
That is up for debate. The funny part is 4 years ago you would never made that statement, but now it is a convienant way justify her more recent actions.
if we’re given that her soul was split led her to be manipulated by the Jailor it is fair that she is back to her normal self now.
Can you really judge someone’s actions if they’re operating with 1/2 a soul? I’m no big fan of Sylvanas or the kinda chesesy BS that happens at the end of 9.1 cinematics but her story isn’t too bad.
What does my head in is that the Jailor can end it all after getting the last sigil. He chooses to not only leave but give her, her soul back. Given all of his actions before how does this make sense!
All you need to know to make sense of it is that Sylvanas has never, ever, been on anyone’s side but her own since she was raised into undeath. She has never switched sides and she won’t be switching sides in the future, since the only side that matters to her is her own.
It does not matter if it makes sense in some twisted way.
She committed genocide and it produced nothing of value. It was pure shock value that writers thought would be cool, or had no plans of Shadowlands direction at that point.
There’s no satisfying wrap to that story, and that’s the main thing for MMORPGs. FF14 opened my eyes to good story, I admit I almost cried at some points, that’s how WoW used to make me feel. This… this is bland. Emotionless. Games aren’t there to give you a bitter end, they’re here to inspire you and fill you up with joy.
Remember how WoD trailer cinematic made you feel?
Remember the curiosity of Pandaria?
The Lich King cinematic?
Hell even Cataclysm invoked so much hype.
We don’t really get that anymore. The creativity is gone, all we’ve got left is writers inspired by Game of Thrones and Marvel.
Yes, because they made that choice of their own free will. Half a soul or not they could have not done it but they did. The whole “half her soul” might add some context to the situation but it doesn’t excuse it.
