Guilds in Classic

Having played in Vanilla for a bit before TBC, I must say the current Classic guilds do not hold any resemblance of 2006-7 time frame guilds. All the guilds I have associated with so far have been geared to end game and raids. Very little help while leveling. Guild banks only have end game stuff in stock. All leveling drops get sold to vendors for gold. Some say they are social and helping guilds but fall very short. The value of belonging is lost still.
Maybe, I just have not found a good all round guild yet. What are your thoughts and observations?

“Times Change”

It would be very hard to replicate that same experience from early wow. The game started with but a fraction of today’s wow population and there was very little information about how to play the game.

Compare that to classic where you are likely getting the peak population right out the gate. Not only that but all these people know what they want to play, know what goals there will be to achieve and know all tthe best routes to achieve those goals right out of the gate. It’s no wonder that there is such and endgame focus, because no one needs to try out other classes to work out what is/will be good a max level.

If you want to relive that kind of experience again it will probably never be with WoW. It will more than likely need to be a new MMO that grows to become the same thing WoW became… the only problem is with WoW on the market and so many players having invested many years of their lives to the game its near impossible for a new MMO to retain players and grow, especially without cutting corners and going FtP and riveted with MTX.

classic is mainly populated by retail players who want new raid content.
leveling is about over, now we’re in the endgame phase of classic.

This. I came to the game a few months after release and by then most of the /lfg channel was wtb runs and many guilds already had raids on farm. When it comes to leveling quests you have a better shot looking for someone leveling an alt in the area if you need help. I found it impossible to recapture the feelings of my past but hey the nostalgia was nice for awhile

Thank you for your thoughts and observations. I appreciate your responses.

Uaaa, guild banks?

Guilds were/are pretty awkward in Vanilla/Classic WoW, since some crucial features (like in-game guild vaults for example) are missing.

The best way to get what you want is to take ownership of making it happen. Start doing the things you want to see, and people around you will start doing it as well.

A lot of the time you just need to get the ball rolling.

you are too late for guilds to help you lvl since mostly everyone is 60 and if you do want help join a lvlin guild.

Most servers have a couple leveling guilds on them. They are easy to spot, just see who has the most members you encounter while leveling, then /who that guild and check the level spread.

I joined on on my realm, they helped me get to 60 on my mage. I then did a days worth of power leveling to return the favor, and I joined my main guild.

I’m in only three guilds in WOW Classic.

One is close family and friends, so by default we are social and helping, but we haven’t been going out and recruiting other people because I’m the only one who has a pretty guaranteed gaming time. I still do most stuff solo, but am there to join them for thing when they have a chance to play.

One is on the Brazilian realm, and while people chat in guild, I don’t speak Portugese so I’m usually scrambling with translations. But it’s nice to see a core of around 12 people on when I’m on a realm with concurrent populations in the 200-300 range, and I have sent low-level items to guildies they’d be appropriate for.

The last is a leveling guild, and they helped me with bags, while I helped someone else with a quest. They advertised as a leveling guild, and they’re living up to that for now.

It is hard work to put together, run, and recruit for a guild, to find the right mix of friendly people who get along, to keep everyone engaged, to have to decide the rules and deal with the drama if you need to kick someone.

A lot of the people with the motivation to put in the work have specific goals, and end-game, whether PvE or PvP, happens to be that goal for a lot of people. Guildies who level slower may be a hindrance to that goal, and thus get less attention.

Add in the lack of a guild bank system (which did exist in TBC, 2007) and there’s a lot more challenge in trying to manage a guild with the whole alt as guild bank setup.

My primary thought and observation, though, is the classic adage - be the change you want to see. Why sit back and expect other people to do the hard work so you get the benefits you want?
