Guilds? Are they a "good social aspect" or not really

I feel the Guild aspect of the game is dying out, no thanks to becoming socially awkward when I’m socially awkward enough

Guild name changed twice due to faction hopping but Ive been in the same core guild since 08. Got made gm at some point much to my dismay and I’ve been stuck with it ever since. Typically houses a total community of about 35 people, some of us meet up at blizzcon when the money permits, and we’ve been aotc to mid mythic pretty much the whole time.

Like many other folks here I would have quit wow long ago (probably back in mop) if not for having a good guild community .

I like my guild but I noticed we get randoms who join and expect us to cozy up to them and help them out right out the gate, they never socialize at all and then just dip when we don’t drop everything were doing to pump them through keys.

Getting into the guild is like walking into the bar, it doesn’t make you buddies with the regulars. You still need to put the effort in to actually socialize.

I like how OP is all “I am pretty perfect and amazing, its everyone else that is horrible”

Once again. This personality trait definitely tells me why OP seems to have issues finding a guild.

Yea they really didn’t start the conversation with a “I’m open to socialize” vibe

I love how you reply to me specifically and call me OP.

That doesn’t say much on your social skills apparently.

So I’m guessing I wouldn’t bother with your guild.

Plus I never said I even wanted to join a guild.

My problem isn’t with not finding one.

My problem is with noone is social in any guilds and they don’t hold the wow community together like a lot of people are trying to to claim.

Being ina guild for years. Is one thing.

New players. Returning players. How are they supposed to get into new content? Oh yeah doing older content their guild refuses to do.

Can’t get a group up for it either? What’s left to do. Oh yeah quit playing wow since every person on there refuses to get these people to where they need to be cause the old content isn’t new and shiny anymore so no one cares.

But everyone says. GUILD FOR THIS GUILD FOR THAT…

Guilds do nothing so how are they the social glue that keeps people playing wow…

I dont agree that you have the experience to make this claim.

Why do new players have to do old group content?

I don’t join guilds anymore. The only reason would be if I decided to care enough to want to raid, but I haven’t cared in a long time. Raiding in WoW isn’t fun for me anymore. It’s become so twitchy/esport centric, and moved so far away from the old school raiding format, that I just plan on not doing any raiding in every expansion.

As far as the social aspect, well that’s a joke too. I get 10 random invites a day, having never spoken to a single person inviting me. I see people bragging about having 300+ players in a guild. I mean seriously WTF? I remember when having more than 45-50 players was laughed at as being a zerg guild. How can you build a sense of community in a 300 person guild?

I am old, I get that, having played these games since the late 90’s, but I really don’t get these kids these days…

Because just maybe, they want to experience as much of the game as possible.

I quite like the analogy above.

You join a guild at 430~ ilvl this tier, don’t talk to anyone, sign up to the weekly heroic clear and get declined for your ilvl then leave that’s on you. Maybe there’s an alt normal run you can join, maybe you can make friends / connections with people in the guild and they will want to help you because they like you and want you to be able to participate in more activities with them.

A guild is not obligated to carry every new member just because they’re in the guild.

if you took half the time talking to guildies that you did writing this novel of a post you’d probably make some friends

uh, you’re over generalizing.

I’ve been in 8 guilds over the years. One was toxic and I was gone in a day or two. Another had a raid leader so abusive that I left that one as well

But the others have been really great experiences. My current guild is really a fantastic social outlet. we play together, discord together–have a blast at our raid nights. My last guild was awesome as well but they all left for greener pastures.

That isnt what OP stated.

This is what OP stated. Which has nothing to do with what you said.

I asked why a person is REQUIRED to do old group content to get into new content.

Ah got it, and you’re right, there is zero need. Missed your point for sure.

I think what they meant is “Obsolete for the guild”

Example being you join a guild that does heroic and lightly dabbles in mythic but you’re 430 ilvl and get mad they won’t put on a normal run specifically for you.

exactly what i was thinking.

How does being in a lot of guilds. Over 20 years not give me any experience with this subject?

Why do guilds need to do old content???

Seriously? You think a fresh capped toon can be helpful in the last tier of a raid ? That is still carrying them which guilds won’t do…

Running old content gears their new guildies so they rotate people around if they need to. Someone doesn’t show up or quits playing you are covered and you would have a player that appreciates the guild and it’s members for spending that hour a week with them doing old content to get them caught up.

Instead guild die because they try to recruit already geared people and can’t fill the hole. So they break up.

Except there is a degree of personal responsibility.

You don’t need a guild to get geared up

Otherwise people will join a guild to get instantly carried, then leave. Guilds aren’t there to be a free carry service for anyone that joins.

If you are a fresh capped toon, you are being a bit selfish joining a guild at late end game progression and expecting everyone to stop what they are doing to get you 100 ilvls. Why should they invest in a person that has not shown they are willing to invest in themselves and has not invested in the guild?

There in lies the problem, pugs are typically bad at the game. You build a guild around players that are good at the game. And when you finally get that good quality pug, you try and recruit them.

A guild is only as good as the people that make it up. If the guild is full of jerks, it shouldn’t be too shocking if it has little social value. I’m still in my guild (since 2010) because I like the people in it. At times, yes, it’s nothing but an extra chat menu. What’s wrong with that? When I’m out doing quests, having a group of people I’ve been playing the game with for over a decade to chat with, laugh with, etc. makes some of the mundane activities in the game more tolerable.
