You have been in a guild for the last few years, you made some good friends in that guild, but the guild is not very selective on who it lets into the guild and a new group has started forming in the guild that are not your people. You fundamentally struggle to connect with these people, they are creating an atmosphere where you no longer feel welcome. You give it time but it only seems to be getting worse.
You are concerned that leaving the guild abruptly will cause drama and potentially rupture some connections you’d like to keep intact with some of those friends, but you no longer wish to play or interact with these others who are always present.
Not leaving the guild is making it more difficult to network with other guilds you have connections with and would who you play with more, but due to many of their players utilizing the guild channel in game.
You would like to transition from one guild to one of these other guilds with as little fuss as possible, how do you choose to accomplish this?
If you like em enough as people, just say you’d still be down for M+ and if they need fills for raid nights. Leave an alt or two in the guild, go fulfill your dreams.
It’s not like you’re handing in your resignation at work and are worried about a bad reference. This is a guild, its mostly people you will never know in life and probably rarely know in the game.
Talk to the GM, share your concerns, about feeling disconnected, not enjoying a guild environment you once very much enjoyed, etc.. Who knows, perhaps the GM doesnt realise the situation.
If they know and don’t care, you have your answer. If they don’t realise it and make moves to fix things, it might get better.
Simple just tell them you found a better and younger guild and they have higher parses and have accepted you as one of their own and even paid you gold to join them because of your unique skills that you provide.
If you want you can always pretend you made a mistake and type
\gquit in the chat and be like oh lol jk jk
then /gquit for real.
If they were people you actually were decently close to and had a personal connection with then whisper them your btag and say you’re leaving but want to stay in touch. Otherwise either just go if you are otherwise a nobody or a simple blurb about best wishes for all if you want to adhere to social pleasantries.
Speaking from experience, I dropped the guild on all characters, switched realms, and cut all ties.
At the end of the day, I had never met a single person from the guild in real life and never will. They stopped including me and didn’t make me feel welcome. Why should I have cared how they felt when I left?
So reach out to them, tell them you are leaving the guild, but want to keep in touch with them. Add them to friends if the feeling is mutual, or on discord or whatever.
If you want to leave a guild without drama while still keeping contact, only a few rules.
Say goodbye politely, even towards those you don’t like.
Do not use any targeted remarks. Ultimatums of “them or me” is an easy way to make people hate you.
Make intent clear, maybe leave a line of contact and remain friendly to continued conversation even if you are playing with a different group. Lots of guild discords have a “friend” role to remain in contact even without explicit guild membership.
Guilds aren’t absolute statements of dedication, if they try and guilt trip you over it they aren’t worth the effort. As for all social relationships, you can still hang out or play games with friends without marrying them.
