You can do effective dps as a feral druid, it just takes a bit more effort than most classes. Namely farming “Manual Crowd Pummelers” from Gnomer if you want to be competitive for bosses.
Check out “Shedo the druid” on youtube for a full guide
Edit: As others have pointed out and I have confirmed. I am wrong about MCP and Cat form. MCP helps Cat. Leaving my post intact to display my wrongness. The rest of what I said is still ok though.
First, MCP isn’t for feral dps. It is for Feral Tanking.
Cat form already has maximum attack speed in the game. It cannot be increased by any means including MCP.
Cat form is all about powershifting. You get your %hit up, get a mana pool, and powershift and shred as much as possible. That is it for PvE dps’ing and it won’t top the chart but it won’t be low either when done well. Like a rogue, on long fights it will out preform most mana based DPS.
The appeal of the feral dps in a raid is the Leader of Pack buff for all party members, they can apply fiery fire, brez, and the drops they are after don’t conflict much with other dps. You are useful and can have a place in most guild raids if they know what they are doing.
As far as PvP goes, druids in many specs are viable. Especially world pvp. It is a skill based/situation based class and can be unkillable when done well, while also getting kills against many other specs.
You’re wrong, actually. MCP is extremely powerful for Feral DPS. Feral tanks can use 3-4 MCPs per raid for threat bursts. Feral DPS use 2-3 MCPs PER BOSS for maximum DPS.
Feral Druids are super useful, Brez, Innervate, Tranq, and solid damage. No other class can do some multiple things that make up for bad luck and bad players.
Edit: at lvl 50 I’m top damage in all single target situations.
OP, If you’re just off tanking and your guild doesn’t want you to main tank certain bosses (don’t know why they wouldn’t, some fights Druid is optimal), then just go HotW spec and then you can DPS or Tank (not both) plus effectively heal (you’ll need 2 sets of gear).
With HotW spec you can do both. Keep in mind, because you want to hit nature’s swiftness in the resto tree, you won’t be maxing out feral. You’ll go down to HotW (Heart of the Wild) and specialize either tank heavy talents or DPS heavy talents. The rest go into resto.
I will say this, unless you’re a total try hard, you’ll be far more effective offtanking than DPSing. It works out nicely too, because there’s several encounters where guilds tend to fall short on tanks. With the AQ40 gear and some earlier raid off pieces, you could tank almost anything in the game, if you’re heavier into feral.
