Guardian, Prot paladin, or Brewmaster tanking

Good evening all.

Going into shadowlands I am going to do one of these hybrids as my main. I plan to tank mostly, and heal as an off spec. I’ll also dps from time to time but mostly tank and heal.

I have played all three and tanked with all three specs but I am looking for general feedback/impressions/opinions of all three specs.

Have you ever healed one of these specs if so please share your opinion. If you have ever been in a group as dps with one of these specs please share your thoughts.

Of course if you have tanked as any of these specs please share your thoughts. Just looking for overall information to help me decide what one I want to main.

Thanks and I appreciate all the information/feedback!

If you want to be a good tank. Go prot pally

If you want to be a good tank. Go warlock

Prot abilities sound like you’re throwing pots and pans down a staircase.

I tanked on Prot Paladin a while back and loved it, but it has been a while. Blood DK is my favorite now.

What level are you looking to play at?

Tank effectiveness is high variable based on the content, and the level of content, that you’re doing.

If you’re looking to push the absolute high end, BrM is a good choice. Due to Stagger, they have the smoothest damage intake of all tanks, which makes them a lot easier to heal and a lot less vulnerable to spike damage from big abilities, like the Tankbuster Pylon in M+ or bosses like Yazma.

I’ll be more casual so highest would be maybe +15 keys if that. Heroic raids etc.

In the current meta, Prot Paladins would probably be best for that level of play.

Lots of self healing and some immunities lets you cover for misplays from both you and your healer.

Also Avengers Shield is ridiculously good in M+ when kicks aren’t absolutely perfect due to it just kinda “passively” interrupting targets you might not even be thinking about.

Though everything is subject to change, and I haven’t really kept abreast of Paladin and Druid changes, so I’m still biased towards Monks.

You feel monk is better than paladin? What one is easier in your opinion to play at that level as a more casual player? Or both are equally good?

Monk has a higher skill floor, which will be raised in Shadowlands. Paladins aren’t as punishing at the casual level, but they’re not going to get as nutty results at the higher level.

Their self healing isn’t as good as other Tanks, so their soloing capabilities aren’t as nutty as say, a Paladin or DK’s are either.

If you’re looking to do 15’s (or their equivalent in SL), alongside Heroic Raiding, any Tank is more than fine enough and ultimately it boils down to what you find more enjoyable to tank with, whether it’s Paladins huge amount of kicks, utility and self-healing, or Monks more mobile style of tanking and the mini-game that Energy and Stagger management brings to the table.

Protection Paladins and Brewmaster Monks are one of the best Tanks.

Blood Death Knights could be somewhat good, but they do have a blindside when it comes to controlling numerous adds (Due to Blood Plague being rendered useless.) and their best build heavily relies off of RNG and wasting runes.
