Guardian Bear Mage Tower post-mortem (commentary)

Hey GD, just got this challenge down today. Felt like sharing what worked for me/my random commentary for those who might still be working on it out there :+1:

Before I start and for some context; I’m one of those Shadowlands-geared players that got “caught with my pants down” since I literally didn’t have any TW twink gear, TW gems, or TW trinkets (I feel your pain :weary: ) in my bags or bank …so the past week was just a bunch of wipes and pretty unproductive tbh (bunch of 12-17k health wipes on Kruul) - other than getting practice

Last night (Friday) I hunkered down for a few hours and farmed out a fresh “Pocket-Sized Computation Device” over in Mechagon, I also picked up the “Cyclotronic Blast” punch-card from the vendor while I was there. I also found out my bank alt had some old enchanted heirloom/leveling gear, and fortunately I still had an heirloom necklace with “Mark of the Hidden Satyr” on it, so I mailed it over to my Druid.

Honestly just those 2 previous-expac items/damage sources made all the difference. Literally overnight I went from struggling and ~15k health wipes to finally getting a Kruul kill today. Obviously bad design by Blizzard (gear being > skill), but it’s whatever I guess - we don’t design the game, we just adapt to whatever their BS “meta” is

Something else that was a very noticeable factor is I went Vers Vers Vers on every single piece that I could - even if it completely trashed my other stats. 177 PvP boots have +Vers? They’re replacing my 252 ones. Rando 207 Korthia piece happens to have +Vers?? It’s replacing the 252 piece, and so on.

Unbuffed stats during wipefest:

17% Critical Strike
31% Haste
10% Mastery
08% Versatility

Unbuffed stats during kill:

20% Critical Strike
13% Haste
06% Mastery
28% Versatility

Anyways…

Consumables Used

  • Steak a la Mode (Vers food)
  • Spectral Flask of Power
  • Shadowcore Oil
  • Drums of Deathly Ferocity
  • Potion of Unbridled Fury

Talents Used

  • 15: Brambles
  • 25: Wild Charge
  • 30: Balance Affinity
  • 35: Heart of the Wild
  • 40: Incarnation
  • 45: Survival of the Fittest
  • 50: Rend and Tear

Phase 1 - Inquisitor Variss

As soon as he became targetable I immediately hit him with the Mechagon trinket (2 minute CD), then immediately popped HoTW and resumed the Boomie rotation as normal/as seen in most Youtube videos.

When the first set of adds popped, I waited for them to gather and popped Barksin + Incarn (3 minute CD) and dragged them “onto” the boss to get 3 Thrash stacks on boss as well. Stayed in for 5 stacks at a time whenever I went in for melee attacks.

He was around 50% HP when the first infernal came online, and around 10-15% HP by the time the second infernal landed. I popped Barkskin liberally whenever it was up and the adds were stacked, I find it does speed up killing them versus Blood Frenzy - saves me a few globals which I used to pump even more into Variss.

Phase 2 - Highlord Kruul

Having a “plan” beforehand was make-or-break for me here, and I went in with the following plan in the back of my mind:

Annihilate 1 = x1 Ironfur
Annihilate 2 = Incarnation + x2 Ironfur
Annihilate 3 = Survival Instincts
Annihilate 4 = Survival Instincts + Barkskin

No matter what, no matter how distracted by the little adds or infernals I became I was going to stick to my plan.

As for phase strategy, I popped drums/pot immediately on him becoming targetable. I waited until shortly after the first Annihilate to hit him with the Mechagon trinket (came off CD around the time Variss died).

Shortly before the 2nd Annihilate my Incarnation CD (3 minutes) from earlier came back up, and that easily carried me thru the 2nd Annihilate and whatever adds popped during the 30 second window. 3rd Annihilate came and I was ready with Survival Instincts.

Towards the end I was just walking over orbs as soon as they popped - anything to get a few more hits in on him. He died shortly before he was about to do his 4th Annihilate.

TL;DR

I found that stacking Vers Vers Vers was “the special sauce” for me, as well as using the Mechagon trinket on cooldown. I also carefully planned my CD timers such that they would be back up when phase 2 rolled around (…making both phases easier).

Anyways that’s all I had for now, thanks for reading. Christmas came “early” today hehe :santa: :christmas_tree:
